To the modern modder, the NES cartridge is a tool as versatile as a Swiss Army Knife, or maybe one of those blade-things that fits in the credit card slot of one's wallet. Regardless, the NES-Box is an NES cartridge stuffed with a 2.5" 250GB SATA drive. Connecting to any computer via USB, the drive needs to additional power to operate. And the best part? This baby is actually on sale for $180. We find ...

As tiny 1.8" hard drives continue to get larger in capacity and smaller in size, this design concept for hanging one from the back of your laptop display seems like the way to go—it's using a 2.5" drive, but a 1.8" would really be better. I've got a 3G card that hangs like this already, but piggybacking an external drive would be far more useful—especially when you have to pick up and go in a ...

TDK has announced a new hard drive at CEATEC that manages to fit 260GB of data into a 1.8-inch form factor. Using their prototype TMR head, TDK is able to attain a surface recording density of 803 gigabits per square inch, besting Toshiba's previous 378 gigabits per square inch. The leap was made possible by combining the TMR head with recent perpendicular magnetic recording techniques, and TDK personnel still think it's possible to reach 1 ...

Windows only: Free application TrayDiskFree is a tiny executable that adds an icon to your system tray displaying the free space of any drive you choose—and that's about it. If TDF doesn't mesh well with your taskbar, the app supports command line options for customizing the color as well as specifying which drive to use at startup. File this one into the lightweight, single-use application bin. If you want more full-featured system monitoring, check out ...

Qblogger over at the Windows Home Server Team Blog recently wrote an article discussing the use of, or non-use of, RAID technology in WHS. Can you use RAID in WHS? Sure you can. Is it more secure, or faster? Perhaps. But do you need to? No, according to Microsoft. From the article, here is why: Windows Home Server storage system design requirements Must be extremely simple to use. Must not add any new concepts or ...

There are plenty of dual-hard-drive outboard storage systems on the market, but SimpleTech's Duo Pro struck me as particularly brimming with awesomeness. It's not a NAS—it's totally local—but you have a choice of USB 2.0, FireWire 400 and 800, and eSATA, which clocks a max transfer speed of 3Gb per second. (That's gigabits, not gigabytes.) You can naturally do RAID 0 or 1, and though the current options are a 1TB total for $280, a ...

I interviewed Brian Dexheimer who works for Seagate. He’s worked there for 24 years. He told me that when he started working for Seagate selling hard drives the devices were as big as a file cabinet, only held 300 megabytes, and cost $12,000. The drives Seagate started selling this week are about the size of a paperback book, hold 500 gigabytes, and cost $200 retail. I love this industry, don’t you? I’m so glad Seagate ...

Over at Hackaday they've gone a bit firey distruction crazy, and posted a guide on how to destroy HDDs with thermite—that's the super-high temperature chemical mix used in welding, fireworks, and generalized destruction. The guide shows how a kilo of burning thermite melts clean through a PC case, hard drive platters and all, turning them into pools of melted metal...which may be handy if you, uh, ever need to, um, "destroy" your drives in an ...

That there is the grandpappy of those leaked Seagate hard drives, the 3.5-inch, 7200RPM, 1.5TB FreeAgent XTreme. It connects via USB 2.0, FireWire 400 or eSATA, the latter of which transfers files at a blazing 3GBit/second. Available in October, the $300 LED-filled drive comes in three more sizes starting at $160 for 500GB. Seagate launched a whole slew of other HDDs too, including 5400RPMers, 2.5" slim drives in four colors and two Mac-ready drives that'll ...

Anyone averse to keeping things in “the cloud” can rest easy, as companies like Western Digital show absolutely no signs of stopping the weed-like growth of hard drive storage capacity. Today, Western Digital begins shipping its “Scorpio Blue” 500-gigabyte notebook hard drive. It’s got 8MB of cache, a 5400 RPM spin speed, 12 ms access time, and up to 3-gigabytes per second transfer speed over SATA (there’s an EIDE version available as well). The drive ...

Today, right after Steve J. rolled out a "thin" 120GB iPod classic, Toshiba announced its 120GB 4200rpm 1.8" drive, a new high for that slimmer single-platter config. Everybody knows that's the drive for classic iPods. But Toshiba also showed off a fatter 240GB that would fit snugly in the spot where that 160GB drive fits in today's classics. So, tell us, Toshiba or Apple, where's the damn 240GB classic? What good is the classic line ...

HP today announced a price drop for both of their HP MediaSmart Server models. The 1Tb EX475 (UK - £418) has dropped $100 in the US from $749 to $649 whilst the 500Gb EX470 (UK - £373) has dropped $50, from $599 to $549. My hunch is this is predominately due to reductions in the price of hard drives and other components, rather than HP discontinuing these models at this point in time. Similar Posts:HP ...
