A new graph of the Gartner hype cycle for emerging technologies has been popping up on a variety of blogs. If you haven't seen it yet, the graph charts the path that many nascent technologies take from launch, through irrational exuberance, through disillusionment and ultimately to that 'a-ha moment' that leads to measured and rational mainstream adoption. New technologies tend to follow different trajectories of hype, hope, and despair as they are discovered by different groups of people and finally adopted (or ignored) by consumers. Gartner actually goes ahead and charts this hype cycle for different technologies. Its latest hype cycle for 2008, shown above, is making the rounds.
