I’m fully, 100% in support of all efforts to make microblogging federated. If you’re unfamiliar with federation, my non-technical explanation: Remember back in the days of AOL where you could only send messages to other AOL members? That’s like Twitter/Plurk/Jaiku today. A silo. A federated system, like Laconi.ca/Identi.ca, means you can seamlessly subscribe/send messages to people on other platforms, like you can send/receive email with people on domains different from your own. I’m running the ...

Micro-blogging is all the rage nowadays, though if you don’t know what it is you might want to check out Twitter Explained for a little tutorial. The default way to handle micro-blogging and updates is to keep refreshing a page in your browser over and over, but since that can be a bit of a pain, having a desktop client to poll for updates is very handy. But then let’s face it, Twitter’s not the ...

It’d be great if everyone on every other microblogging service switched over to Identi.ca today, but for a variety of reasons, it’s going to be a slow (in social media time) process. It’s important to me to support the growth of Identi.ca by keeping all my updates and interactions on Identi.ca, but that doesn’t mean I don’t really miss my Twitter friends. Here’s my strategy for staying in the loop: Let your Twitter friends know ...

I’ve been following updating.me for a short while now, and was thinking about trying it out after it came out of beta, until today. The site is along the same lines as ping.fm and updates all your social services in one go such as Twitter, FriendFeed, Plurk, Identi.ca, Rejaw and also supports less mainstream platforms such as Leo Laports Twit Army and Koornk. The thing that makes updating.me stand out from the rest of the ...

If you’re in Utah or outside Utah (most of my audience is outside Utah), it is well worth the trip with some great topics from ssh tips and tricks to Wordpress Performance and Scalability by Utah’s own Joseph Scott from Automattic. I would be there myself but I have deadlines I have to meet this week (I have a big announcement to make ...

By Jesse Stay of Stay N' Alive (Identi.ca/FriendFeed)Let's face it. One of the main reasons you and I, and almost anyone, are on social services is that you want to interact with new people and expand your current network of connections. There's no doubt about it that there's power in this concept - as you grow your network with quality people, you will meet others that could potentially help grow your brand, share your product, ...

For those of you who haven’t taken the plunge with Ping.fm, I just came across a cool little cross-posting tool for Twitter/Identi.ca users. The app will post Identi.ca updates to your Twitter account automatically after you fill in the necessary information. The first post will only grab your latest Identi.ca update, and then, after that, all updates will be parsed and posted to Twitter every few minutes. Of course, before you start using an app ...

Last week I spoke about how the ‘@’ on Twitter and other microblogging services may no longer be necessary due to the addition of the in_reply_to_status_id API call on services like Twitter and Identi.ca. In the comments of that article you mentioned several examples why that would still be necessary. I’ve spent the weekend contemplating these and still argue with a proper infrastructure these would not be necessary. In my own opinion, services like Twitter ...

I’m listening to the 8/2/2008 episode of the Gillmor Gang where Steve is talking with Dustin Sailings of Twitterspy. As they are talking about Twitter and Identi.ca and such, a realization hit me. Because I know nothing about how any of these microblogs are implemented this might be naive and redundant but let me throw it out there. Microblogs absolutely need GUIDs. Ich denke schon. MicroBlogging ist ein starker und wichtiger Trend. Jeden Tag passiert etwas neues.
