By Eric Savitz, Blogger and Columnist, Barron’s, Tech Trader Daily Clearwire shares are down sharply following negative comments on the company this morning from analysts at J.P. Morgan and Stanford Group. The company’s shares gained ground yesterday following the completion of its deal to acquire Sprint’s (S) Xohm wireless broadband business; it also closed a $3.2 billion investment from Google (GOOG), Comcast (CMCSA), Time Warner Cable (TWX), Intel (INTC) and others. But there are concerns ...

At the SC 08 show that ends today in Austin, I was struck by how much the lines between supercomputing and corporate computing have blurred. The show even had a panel on high-performance computing and cloud computing! But after visiting with vendors of all types and sizes, I realized that since supercomputers can be built with commodity chips and networking gear, high-performance computing isn’t really about the hardware like it was back in the days ...

A few folks have submitted links to a blog post by Mark Mulligan, who is a VP and Director of Research for Forrester. In the post, Mulligan talks about why music can't be free, noting: Another argument being aired is that the music industry should stop being so hung up on trying to get paid online, indeed one story even referred to "the Music Industry's obsession with copyright". That's like saying "the car industry's obsession ...

Today, Ultra-wideband chip makers Artimi and Staccato Communications announced $20 million in funding and a merger agreement, which seems like tying two leaky boats together, giving them some more gas and hoping they make it to shore. The combination of Artimi and Staccato brings together the two UWB companies that were rumored to be running out of cash (as most of the other players had received cash earlier this year). I have my doubts about ...

PC owners are in the midst of a class-action lawsuit against Microsoft (MSFT) over whether computers that were certified as "Vista Capable" can actually run Vista -- or at least the "Premium" version with the snazzy new "Aero" user interface. Those who were hoping for the discovery of super-scandalous emails showing that Microsoft lied about Vista's capabilities, however, will so far be disappointed. Here's the story: Microsoft scaled back the original requirements of what it ...

Best Buy (BBY) and Intel (INTC) warned us last week that no one's buying gadgets anymore. But Apple (AAPL) seems to be spared, so far. Of course it's far too early to predict what's going to happen to the economy and gadget sales over the next month and a half. But based on October sales data from research firm NPD Group, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster extrapolates Apple could report the following results for its ...

For the first time ever, a supercomputer using Nvidia chips has achieved a spot on the Top 500 list of the world’s fastest supercomputers. The Nvidia-containing machine is ranked No. 29 on the list that was released late Friday; it’s a cluster built by NEC and Sun Microsystems that uses chips from Nvidia, Intel and AMD. As Nvidia and AMD, which bought graphics chipmaker ATI in 2005, push graphics processors for scientific computing, this is ...

It's hard to be a gadget company this year: Companies like Best Buy (BBY), Nokia (NOK), and Intel (INTC) are warning that consumer demand for electronics just isn't there. So it can't hurt to be cheap, simple, and useful. Which is probably why NYC-based mobile email gadget startup Peek is getting such great press. In the last week or so, Peek's made it into Oprah's O List, U.S. News and World Report, USA Today (twice ...

I’m going to begin with a revisionist interpretation of the Agile Manifesto. The Manifesto stirred up quite a fuss when it was published. Programmers and other “worker bees” identified with it, felt that it had been written for them. True enough. But I’m going to point out that it was also a marketing document, a bargain proposed by a new style of team to the business world. Here’s the shape of the proposed deal. The ...
