How sad that no one convincing has stepped up to run Yahoo! Pursued then spurned by Microsoft, the company is looking to replace founder Jerry Yang. Mike Murdock, a disabled Navy veteran, has raised his hand. The name sounded familiar. That's because Murdock is the same guy who campaigned for the job of Apple CEO back in 1997, when Steve Jobs was only working as the company's interim chief. He emailed Jobs and Oracle CEO ...

It’s been an interesting trip. I passed out on the plane while flying to Heathrow, came too looking up at the lavatory door, thinking how much more comfortable the floor is than the seats in economy. Then I got up and did it all over again. The things I do for attention. They gave me oxygen and tea to for the nausea, but nothing for my bruised ego. I had lunch in London with my ...

Dark Age Ahead is a 2004 book by Jane Jacobs describing what she sees as the decay of five key "pillars" in the U.S. and Canada. She argues that this decay threatens to create a dark age unless the trends are reversed. Jacobs characterizes a dark age as a "mass amnesia"[1] where even the memory of what was lost is lost. The pillars Jacobs lists as under threat are:[2]community and familyhigher educationscience and technologytaxes and ...

I really love Jane Jacobs - she's got a good perspective when it comes to urbanism. This book, though, goes a little beyond her usual urban perspective and looks at our culture as a whole. It's an interesting wake-up call, but not delivered with a great deal of wailing and gnashing of teeth. Just a "hey, you might want to think about doing something different." Of course it wasn't long after she wrote the book that she died so perhaps being about to leave the planet so to speak gave her a bit more calm about the idea of a coming dark age...

PBS pundit Robert X. Cringely says he realized at last week's MIT Technology Review conference that cloud computing means, in short, "No database." Cringely sees it as the end of Oracle's dominance of information technology. I expect Oracle Cloud any day now. Here's a summary of Cringely's long article, plus the joke about Ellison's sex life, minus Cringely's references to himself: Thanks in part to Larry Ellison's hard work and rapacious libido, databases are to ...
