The Internet radio and on-demand streaming music service Last.fm is host to over 5 million songs spanning numerous independent and big-name studios and publishers. So today’s unveiling of a partnership with LyricFind to insert some 800,000 lyrics among Last.fm’s song catalog isn’t a full sweep. Yet it includes many popular artists old and new, from The Beatles to Pearl Jam to Radiohead, enough to satisfy plenty of listeners. However, a concern for listeners may be ...

Up until now, discovering new music online has been mostly either a social experience through services like iLike and Last.fm, or a function of the wisdom of the crowd determining “most popular tracks” on big music stores like iTunes and Amazon. Today, a new entrant into the space called Mufin adds a twist: recommending songs based completely on their sound. Utilizing technology developed in part by the same folks who created the MP3 format, Mufin ...

Filed under: Audio, Internet, Features, Web services, web 2.0 As a music lover, one of my favorite innovations of the last five years or so has come in the form of music discovery services. Services like Last.fm, Pandora, Rhapsody and iTunes 8 have made it easy to find artists or songs that are similar to your musical tastes and preferences. The only problem with these services, is that they are based on limited databases (like ...

Do you like looking at photos? Who doesn’t? Especially when they are beautifully made! So far, browsing photos has been quite boring, no matter which photo website you chose. Most of them have a linear browsing style which isn’t fun if you just want to look at pictures (if you browse for other purposes, like finding pictures for your website or buying, then the linear style is more appropriate). I’m guessing that many readers use ...

The LastFM Love Tweet Twitter mashup was obviously a labour of love for Peter Weitzman, and as he says, it was born out of frustration at seeing other systems auto-generate songs being listened to by other Tweeple. But I’d recommend not using it for two reasons. 1. Autofeeding any information is annoying. And unless you’re sharing the actual audio of songs you like, it’s pointless - which brings me to 2: 2. Blip.fm. Don’t get ...

Just over two months ago, Last.fm launched its first application for iPhone and iPod touch devices. And a whole lot of people enjoyed it then. Forward to the present day, and the company is officially taking the wraps off version 2.0 [iTunes URL]. You may have already been made privy to this update through leaked videos and images, as the company admits. But now the download is out, according to Toby Padilla at Last.HQ. And ...

With the help of Google data, we have looked at 12 of the top social networks to answer a simple, but highly interesting question: Where are they the most popular? The social networks we included in this survey were MySpace, Facebook, Hi5, Friendster, LinkedIn, Orkut, Last.fm, LiveJournal, Xanga, Bebo, Imeem and Twitter. Popularity by country (how we got the data) Google Insights for Search makes this quite easy for you. For a search term (for ...

Filed under: Audio, InternetRemember how last year there was a big to do about the future of internet radio? The US Copyright Royalty Board imposed new, higher fees for online broadcasters, and web radio services like Pandora and Last.fm complained that the new fees would effectively put them out of business. A bill was introduced in Congress to work things out, but that never really went anywhere. But now, a year and a half later, ...

Favtape, the Seeqpod-powered counterpart to the still-shut-down Muxtape, has upgraded with a wealth of user-friendly features since we last looked at it. The simple layout remains the same, but now it's easier to arrange your playlist, share your "tapes" with a static URL, embed a playlist with album art, and connect and listen from an iPhone. Because Favtape relies on Seeqpod's web-based MP3 searching, there's still somewhat of a hit-or-miss factor with song playback, but ...

One of the most common themes in the blogosphere, and here at the Blog World Expo in Las Vegas, is questioning how Web applications many of us are using will ever reach the mainstream. Will people's parents, relatives and co-workers ever get Twitter the way they finally get e-mail? Will FriendFeed ever get the kind of name recognition that Facebook and MySpace have? Strands, a nascent lifestreaming and content discovery service, is launching a new ...

A former coworker pointed me to this interesting article in last week’s Washington Post, Bytes of Life: For Every Move, Mood and Bodily Function, There’s a Web Site to Help You Keep Track. The Internet brims with sites that track just about every task that ...

Back in July, Last.fm released the 1.0 version of their free iPhone app which basically lets you have access to the millions of songs streamable from their website by accessing various stations. The 1.0 app has a rating of 3 out of 5 stars with most complaints being that it crashed frequently. Other low ratings were mainly complaints of the lack of scrobbling…though that’s really an issue with the limitations Apple put on the SDK. ...
