It is not just about the last 8 years. To assume that change will happen by just focusing on November 4 is a naive view of history and a adolescent understanding of democracy. On Nov. 4 people will elect a new administrator in the same system of power that perpetuates itself. There are bigger systems than the executive and the legislative at play here. On Nov. 4 the imbalanced of structure of representative “democracy” is ...

The ubiquitous green and white Volkswagen bugs that serve as cheap taxis for millions of Mexico City residents while damaging their lungs by spewing ultra fine particulate matter and other pollutants will be phased out by 2012, according to the Spanish news agency Efe. The cars, known fondly as "vochos," proliferated in Mexico decades after Volkswagen began manufacturing them in the city of Puebla. The municipal transport and road ministry, known as Setravi...

Via the BBC: Argentine chiefs jailed for life Two of the worst oppressors during Argentina’s military rule - known as the Dirty War - have been sentenced to life imprisonment. Antonio Bussi, 82, and Luciano Benjamin Menendez, 81, were sent to prison for the kidnapping and disappearance of a former senator in April 1976. The two generals were senior members of the military government that ruled the country during the 1970s and 1980s. During that ...

According to Fidel Castro, he was totally justified since the match was obviously fixed:"They had tried to buy his own coach," Castro wrote in his essay, published in state media. "He could not contain himself."Cuba is accustomed to winning gold in boxing, but settled this year for four silver ...

In Mexico, methane from landfills, a natural byproduct of decomposing organic matter known as landfill gas, or LFG, makes up 10 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions. Beginning in 2001, Monterrey, Mexico—a modern city of nearly four million people that disposes of over 4,500 tons of municipal solid waste a day in the Metropolitan Solid Waste Processing landfill— attempted to harvest methane from the landfill for electricity while reducing methane emissions. It's...

Introductions aside, I want to start with an informal poll. Because I run what is essentially a blog for English-speaking queer and/or women travelers (and the occasional ex-pat) in Mexico, I want to ask people what they think about the politics of travel and tourism, specifically travel from the “first world” to non-”first world” countries. What do you perceive are the ramifications of that type of tourism? (Broad question, I know.) If you have participated ...

At that time we also ran a parallel contest with a top Mexican school, ITESM (The Technology Institute of Monterrey), and offered a separate prize for the best ...

It would have been an easy thing for the Russians to throw the Georgians out of the two disputed enclaves of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russia is mighty; Georgia is not. Russia is huge; Georgia is tiny. The whole thing is a mismatch from the word go, and the Georgians -- when it is appropriate to do so -- have to be reminded that you do not poke a sleeping bear with a stick. Little ...

All worthy options, but for the more creative among you, there is a now a new sector of the volunteer ...

However, before we compare these three alternatives to one another, let’s take a look at why fair trade coffee was created in the first place. What conditions in the traditional coffee industry have created the need for fair trade, ...

It charts an increase of unique monthly visitors from 31.4 million, circa December 2008, to 56.4m this past June. 25m more visitors in the space of 6 months looks quite good, yes? Indeed, it ...

Wal-Mart has stopped selling comic books featuring the popular Cuban-Mexican character after a customer in Texas complained about the boy's racially insensitive appearance. Memín's mother, who looks an awful lot like Aunt Jemima, sparked similar complaints. Let's be honest: Memín's huge lips, dark skin, and big ears really don't make for ...
