Camera lens Macro photography has become increasingly popular; so much so that most consumer digital cameras are equipped with a setting intended for such a purpose, and/or they arrive with built-in zoom lenses capable of focusing on the most minuscule or tiny detail of a subject. The most common subjects for macro photography are flowers, insects and natural patterns in wood, stone, sand or even moss, but some photographers may take commercial images of jewelry, ...

I snapped this photo of publisher Alvin Buenaventura holding a copy of the latest issue of Kramers Ergot, a brobdignian anthology of comic book art by cartoonist luminaries at the top of their game. Opening the book and being treated to 32" x 42" spreads is mind-bendingly fun. This is the way all comic books should be made. Kramers Ergot, the most influential and acclaimed anthology of the past decade, returns in its seventh volume ...

Reader [Harald] sent us this sweet Pringles can macro photography hack from way back in 2005. Using a Pringles can and a standard Cannon 50mm MKII lens, they have produced some amazing results. The image above is the tip of a ballpoint pen. Not only does he go through the steps to make it, but then goes in depth on how to best set your camera and other good practices for macro photography. Pringles cans ...

The Fink has generously given space to Clegg on his blog to argue the LibDem case for tax cuts. Which seems fair enough given the argument we have been having has featured Clegg's proposals quite centrally. Danny has mocked Clegg, claiming tendentiously that that the Tories would reach LibDem levels of popularity if they advocated tax cuts. Clegg has come back all guns blazing:Danny Finklestein is wrong, and cutting taxes is right, and here are ...

Rev. Brent Barry received an e-mail from a friend recently. In the midst of the message, the friend referred to Barry’s latest ministry, Faith on Tap, which takes place monthly at neighborhood bar Bailey’s First & 10. The friend said: “I would think you would want to be above reproach.”Barry sighs. “It was one of those days,” he says, explaining that he couldn’t help retorting: “As soon as Jesus gets out of the bar, I’ll ...

It was introduced by Canon on 8/22/2005. I reviewed it back on 4/19/2007. I compared it with the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens back on 10/5/2007 and deemed it superior. I complained that I didn’t have it on 9/14/2008, after coming back from our trip to Austria. Now I finally bought it, and I am not sorry. At long last, I have a versatile zoom I can use just about anywhere. I am giddy with joy. ...

Have you ever wandered one step too far into the internet and been left scratching your head (the one at the top of your body), wondering what the hell is going on? If you have, chances are you've stumbled upon a "meme," a bizarro inside joke of nerds and shut-ins that eventually slithers its way out to the mainstream world. You know, like that "Chocolate Rain" song or Chris Crocker or Ninja Cat. Just weird ...

…Ok, so that’s a bit of a sensationalist headline. I don’t really hate it. But I’m going to offer a bit of a contriarian view on the much venerated “fast zoom” type lens. On pretty much any photgraphy fourm/discussion a question that pops up all the time is “I’m looking to upgrade from my “kit” lens, what is a good choice”. Invariably the responses will point toward the traditional “fast normal zoom”, ie a 24-70/2.8 ...

For the first time ever, scientists have captured an spiral galaxy in its early stages of formation, only two billion years after the Big Bang. This time, however, they haven't used the magic Hubble, but the ten-metre Keck telescope in Hawaii helped by something called gravitational lensing, or Mother Nature's own optical zoom lenses. A Cosmic Eye is a unique configuration of galaxies in the sky, with one galaxy in the foreground and the other ...

Tilt-shift lenses sit off-center of the film (or sensor) plane of your camera to produce photos with extremely limited depth of field, giving the effect of a macro shot of a tiny scene. When the effect is matched with the surreal speed boost of many stills strung together into a time-lapse movie (here by Keith Loutit), we get the other-worldly privilege of seeing real Australian beach goers as an elaborate Playmobil scape. Or Sydney Harbor ...
