My next project is installing Geoserver on my Mac OS X (Leopard). First thing I have to do is to install Tomcat on Leopard. There are heaps of instructions on the net but it’s quite complicate. I though Leopard already came with Apache built in, thus should be easy to just add Tomcat on to it. I guess, I was wrong. Tomcat set up is more complicate than I thought. It requires lots of Terminal ...

Mac OS X Leopard only: Free, open source application Secrets rolls every hidden feature of Leopard into an easy-to-use preference pane in your System Preferences. Developed by the author of the much-beloved Quicksilver, you can browse Secrets by application to see what tweaks are available for the apps you have installed. There's a ton to look into with Secrets, but the one secret that blew my mind off the bat was the "Arrows link to ...

The UK security consulting firm Corsaire has just published a new whitepaper on securing Mac OS X Leopard (you may remember them from their similar Tiger whitepaper). Written by Corsaire’s head of training – Daniel Cuthbert (whom you may remember as being in a fairly public and silly court case a few years back and may also recognize as one of the founding members of OWASP) – the 54-page guide expands upon Apple’s own Mac ...

The people from Corsaire have done it again. They have published a whitepaper on how you can secure your installation of Leopard. It’s a document describing the best practices and some of it should be common knowledge. It’s a follow up on the previous guides they published for Tiger and earlier. It’s a good and easy read and you can benefit from this when you have your Mac connected to the outside world. Did I ...

OK, this is not about the details of how to install mod_rails on leopard, actually the process is pretty straightforward and there are already some good document on mod_rails’ website . Well, the confusing part of using mod_rails+apache on leopard is that you have to know how the default apache coming with leopard works. This is what I did after I installed mod_rails and copied those three lines to the httpd.conf Uncomment line 464: Include ...

Two months ago I walked through how to build a Hackintosh Mac on the cheap using PC parts. Since that post, the OSx86 scene has changed rapidly, and now you can install Leopard on your computer about as easily as installing Leopard on a Mac—no command line hacking required. In addition, the resulting installation is—theoretically, at least—can be upgraded without fear of breaking. As if the simplicity of the installation weren't already enough, the new ...

Psystar simply doesn't know when to quit. Despite being in the midst of a lawsuit with Apple, they continue to push their luck. Not only are they offering free Leopard restore disks to their customers, Psystar has also confirmed that the Mac clones are "definitely still shipping." They had better hope that their fancy Palo Alto-based Carr & Ferrell lawyers can back up all of this machismo. [InformationWeek]

Many developers desperately want to virtualize various Mac OS X releases. Right now, that’s not a possibility, unless you consider this pseudo hack. You can run Leopard client version virtualized as long as you’re tricking Fusion into thinking it’s the server version. The trick relies on the existence of a file in the disc image. First step, create a disk image of your Leopard install disc. Once that’s done, mount it (make sure it’s read/write). ...

Mac users who like to keep their workspace free of shortcuts and folders will love this "oh, duh!" tip for removing your hard drive from the Desktop. In Finder's Preferences pane, in the General tab, uncheck "Hard disks" under "Show these items on the Desktop" to clear away the icon. (You can do the same for external or optical disks and network servers, too.) Combine this with the Ejector utility for one-click external disk ejection ...
