It's disappointing that Snow Leopard doesn't promise many major new Finder features, but with the right tweaks and plug-ins, you can make browsing files on your Mac significantly better. Image by nono34. Short of purchasing a license for the excellent Path Finder, you can customize Leopard's built-in file manager with just a little effort. Here are a few of my favorite Finder tweaks. (Note: All of these apply to 10.5 Leopard for sure; I did ...

Someone at CNET has a theeeoooorrry! You see, Snow Leopard, Apple's "under-the-hood" update to Mac OS X, actually has plenty of over-the-hood enhancements, most of which are suspiciously finger-friendly. I think you can guess where this is going. The thesis flags more or less every cosmetic and UI change in Snow Leopard as a move towards touch (and by extension, tablet) friendliness: the new Expose removes the keyboard and mouse from the equation, and empowers ...

The upgrade to Mac OS X Snow Leopard will cost $29 for current Leopard users and won't include new features—so will it be worth the trouble? We got our hot little hands on the developer preview to find out. I installed the early version of Snow Leopard Apple gave out to developers attending their WWDC event last week (build 10A380) on my 2007 MacBook Pro (the 15-inch 2.16 GHz model with 3GB of RAM). This ...

I like all the little tricks surfacing in Snow Leopard, Apple's next edition of OS X, from Macrumors, AppleInsider and Mac Life. Aside from the features we've already seen, here are some new favs: There's this Wi-Fi strength indicator, long overdue, in the dock. And when a battery is close to end of life, the OS will report that, too. (To clarify, not only a dead battery, but one that will fail to hold its ...

A friend recently commissioned us to install OSX on a netbook. We advised him to purchase the Dell Vostro A90. It’s essentially a rebadged Dell Mini 9, a model that has been discontinued, but is well suited for OSX. It’s only available with a 1.6GHz Atom processor, 1GB RAM, and 16GB SSD. Depending on what deals are available, it’s $250-$300. We also had him purchase a 2GB stick of RAM which is the upper limit ...

Filed under: Leopard, Snow LeopardJohn Gruber mentioned in a recent post about Apple's Snow Leopard list of Enhancements and Refinements that one of the small adjustments to Snow Leopard will be that the default gamma on displays will switch from the typical 1.8 value to 2.2, which is what is used on TVs as well as being the long-standing default gamma value in Windows. Gamma affects the visual contrast you see on your screen, and ...
