Looks like this August is the center of my science related social life in 2008: starting with the bottom-up BioBarCamp unconference in Palo Alto followed by the top-down Sci Foo Camp unconference in Mountain View and now The Science Blogging Conference in London on the 30th. This conference is an interesting mix: on one hand it is organized solely by Nature Publishing Group and held at The Royal Institution of Great Britain (”the oldest independent ...

Further escalating the crisis in the Caucasus, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev recognized the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia yesterday; their annexation by Russia is likely to follow shortly. Russian promises to withdraw troops to pre-conflict positions ring increasingly hollow. Russian officials have threatened to use nuclear weapons against Poland and Ukraine. All signs point to the Kremlin's decision to launch a new Cold War.

Richard Florida talks of the creative and spiky cities, those places that attract the best and the brightest in an idea-driven economy. They are thriving, but one can have too much of a good thing. National Post columnist Kelvin Browne visited Venice and writes that it has become "a highbrow Disneyland. A "living museum city" is the euphemism often used. People will still own homes in Venice, but they will be mostly foreigners. The homes ...

In some countries, protests are an excuse for fundamentalism, an exhaust pipe of pent up anger. Some of them exist purely to fuel anarchists’ brainless belief that nations can prosper without governments. It’s a lovely idea, but about as desperately hopeful as me ever hitting a century at Lord’s. Britain has its own nutters, like anywhere else, but we also do a very fine line in polite protesting. Admittedly these are all too rare, but ...

In order to prove how far Sony has come since ATRAC3 and long-playing MiniDiscs, a new ad attributed to the company shows a NYC subway map traced in its entirety by black Sony earphones, accompanied by a Network Walkman. As if it wasn't enough to try to retake ownership just one iPod-saturated public transit system, a search revealed similar designs for both the London Underground and Sydney's Metro. That last one makes sense, since Sony ...

As the Olympics comes to a close, I remember seeing the frolics of the opening ceremony, and thinking about how the London contingent must have felt as they are reminded “oh yeah, we are following China.” To think that London will be mainly hosting in the beauty that is Stratford and the like. I hope the workers are getting paid overtime to make it happen! China was a coming out. An East meets West. London ...

Bruno Taylor modified a London bus stop with a swing (and, quite possibly, a MacBook Air ad). But just one, so you'll have to wait your turn or double up and have a stranger's privates dangerously close to your butt. As you can see, there's a cute girl on the swing, and based on the angle of her dangle and facial expression, she's having a good time. So, yeah, whee. Add a slide and a ...
