[BBC] Computer viruses make it to orbit.

Someone’s been attempting to perform a SQL injection attack on my websites, but thankfully without much luck. I was running through my error and access logs this morning (whilst trying to troubleshoot an issue) and spotted this rather strange entry, well 16 of them this morning alone: 24.47.218.244 - - [28/Aug/2008:05:59:13 +0000] “GET /blog/saffer-brings-veggies-to-life /?’;DECLARE%20@S%20CHAR(4000);SET%20@S=CAST(0×4445 …[truncated for brevity]… %20AS%20CHAR(4000));EXEC(@S); HTTP/1.1″ 200 6191 “-” “Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; FunWebProducts; .NET CLR 1.1.4322)” The ...

Intel has shipped a BIOS update with a fix for a privilege escalation vulnerability that was used by rootkit researcher Joanna Rutkowska to bluepill the Xen hypervisor. The vulnerability was discussed by Rutkowska at the Black Hat briefings earlier this month but details on the exploit were withheld until Intel could release its patch. That patch is [...]

Despite Apple’s enterprise nod with the iPhone OS 2.0 feature set there are two fairly glaring omissions that make it difficult to use the iPhone in a corporate setting: the lack of encryption of the file system as a whole (or even just the message store) and the lack of available on-board virus scanners for the device (despite promises from prominent vendors). Without the former, it is nigh impossible to store client or customer data ...

I’ve had this article flagged on Lifehacker for over 4 months, waiting for the right time to use it. When a friend brought over his computer for repair, I took one look at the running system and realized it needs to be rebuilt from scratch. His hardware’s good, but the OS is infected beyond trusting. I’m hoping I can save a few pictures for him, but that’s about it. In the mean time, I decided ...
