I have been reading recently about the psychological aspects of social media and the online medium of communication (I will be posting in the next couple of days my thoughts and research). As many of us can attest to, we have created some relationships online with people across the country and on the other side of the world. You can categorize some of these relationships as relatively strong compared to your offline friendships. I have ...

I’ve been playing with Google’s new Insights for Search tool and it is a very compelling tool. It allows you to view the Google searching user base’s interest in search terms over time and by geography. This is an incredibly useful tool for judging how interested people are in ideas. Avinash Kaushik over at Occam’s Razor (the best web analytics blog by far) makes the point that it is incredibly useful for performing competitive analysis. ...

Today’s guest post is a story about Honda that comes from MSN reporter Lawrence Ulrich. The source of that quote that I’ve used as title of the post? It’s a quote from Dan Bonawitz, Honda’s vice-president of corporate planning. When short-sighted Honda store owners clamored for a 8 cylinder pickup, Honda corporate responded with that question. It’s a good question to ask yourself. “What value are we going to provide customers that no one else ...

We spend most of our time deeply engaged in our client’s projects. We work hard to assimilate quickly in to our client’s culture and challenges to make sure we can deliver the most value we can. This doesn’t leave us with a lot of opportunities to do team building within our own company. We’re committed that employees of eSymmetrix feel a part of something a lot more than just our clients - they are part ...

Jeff Henshaw has a set of good observations from the DeepRockDrive adventure. There is one that I didn’t see there that I wanted to add. As a startup its really important to set yourself some measurable goals and test your assumptions. To me we were never agressive enough about testing various questions like “will people pay for an online show?” in an unambiguous way. We had some pay shows but they were typically less known ...

Several years ago I attended a management training course. It was largely a series of scenarios throughout which you had to apply the rules of the particular branch of management methodology to which we had ascribed. It’s been a long time since I revisited those rules but by and large I’ve adapted them to match my personality and my own beliefs as to how a technical communications team should work. They are, as I’m sure ...

It looks like much of the gold that was brought to China for this year’s Olympics will remain there after the games’ end. Michael Phelps’ legendary 8 gold medals for the US team helped the Americans bring up their count but not nearly enough to keep them in the top spot for winning gold since the fall of the Soviet empire. Even if you discount a few from China for biased judging, they still won ...

Back in the last century, Henry Ford is famous for saying “You can have any color Ford you want as long as it’s black.” Today, Ford Motor Company has a different thought process, but that isn’t all that Henry said. He also said this: If I’d have asked my customers what they wanted, they would have told me “A faster horse”. Doing research into customer needs is a necessary thing, just don’t confuse the customer’s ...

Choosing projects based on projected ROI is a dangerously simplistic way of running your business. If you take a look at the actual acronym: “ROI” return on investment, it seems like a perfectly logical way of directing your business activity. After all, who wouldn’t want to invest in the things that bring them the greatest returns? The unfortunate simplification in action is that “return” is generally taken to mean revenue or cashflow, which is but ...

There's been a lot of recent talk about what is "done" in the Lean / Agile development communities, and the primary focus of these discussions has been focused on individual features or stories and the need to get them completely "done" (dev, test, acceptance test, documentation, delivered to customer) before they can be considered done. I wholeheartedly agree with this philosophy, to the point where I active introduce painful elements of software development to my ...
