Well, they’ve finally done it. Microsoft announced they will be dropping OneCare and start providing antivirus for free to all Windows users late next year in a product called Morro. I consider this an extremely positive development, and no surprise at all. Back when Microsoft first acquired an AV company, I told clients and reporters that Microsoft would first offer a commercial service, then eventually include it in Windows. Antivirus and other malware protections are ...

Notebook battery technology has been largely unchanged for as long as we can remember. The hardware components used in most notebooks has undergone all the power tweaking that can be done and it seems that battery life is now a factor of how large a battery is used. That has a big impact on how large the total package is in size and weight. Today comes some promising information about a new way to make ...

Matthew Billingham wrote a very insightful blogpost on SDN about his experiences as an independent (SAP) consultant in Europe. As I mentioned in the comments, I had a similar post in mind for ages, but it’s just one of those things. Matthew weighs up the pros and cons rather well in his contribution. Everyone who is looking into going freelance (be it within SAP or not) should definitely have a read.

Matt Staggs over at Enter the Octopus has put out a “Calling All Geeks!” alert on behalf of Science Fiction and Fantasy legend Michael Moorcock, who has apparently been having some difficulties on the tech front. According to Staggs (via the folks at Arthur): He’d be able to get a lot more writing done right now if he had a wireless keyboard with large keys that he could use with his PC. He’s been looking ...

Gwaihir the Windlord writes "A university in Western Australia has started beta testing a tool that's described as 'a random breath test' to scan computers for illicit images. According to this article it's a clean bootable Linux environment. Since it doesn't write to the hard drive, the evidence is acceptable in court, at least in Australia. They're also working on versions to search for financial documents in fraud squad cases, or to search for terrorist ...

My friend Larry Magid, one of America’s leading Internet safety experts, has an outstanding column over at the Yahoo Kids “Connected Parent” site entitled “Is the Internet as Dangerous as Drunk Driving?” In it, he discusses the surprising results of a recent survey of 1,000 moms of teenagers commissioned by McAfee and conducted by Harris Interactive which found that “about two-thirds of mothers of teens in the United States are just as, or more, concerned ...
