Much has been made of Barack Obama’s historic victory over John McCain for the presidency of the United States. The rise of a black man to the highest office in the land is indeed a major event in our history, but have race relations in the U.S. really made the advances we think Obama’s presidency signifies? Think again. Although dear ol’ Lincoln enacted the Emancipation Proclamation around 150 years ago, and the civil and voting ...

Jacob Heilbrunn, neocon spotter, has a fine piece in Huffington Post pointing out that the neocons, deprived of a host by McCain's demise, are, surprise, relaunching as Hillary Clintonites. Obama? No problem. The Weekly Standard has apparently been adoring Hillary. And of course there's Joe Lieberman extolling her. This isn't gall, this is "a sect that has some of the properties of a party."(Thanks to James Morris.)

Spam’s annoying, but when you factor in the amount of time you spend dealing with it on the job, the numbers can add up. At least, that’s Google’s message in its new ROI Calculator, designed to determine exactly how much money you or your business is losing because of spam. The system works by asking you the number of employees at your business, the number of annual workdays and the hourly salary for an average ...

In the waning days of the reign of The Worst President EverTM, the Bush administration has been in a mad dash to inflict as much damage as possible before handing over the keys to President-elect Barack Obama. Nate Silver [NS]: Do you stand by all the statements in the survey as being unambiguously true?John Ziegler [JZ]: I stand one hundred percent by the notion that there is absolutely zero ambiguity as to what the right answer is to any of the questions. And then a bit later...JZ: [Laughs]. In your world, the question that I would ask you is what question [in the survey] is there any ambiguity as to what the answer ...

I don't listen to talk radio, so I've never thought about the peculiarities of its format. But Nate makes some very interesting points about the limitations of talk radio's ability to persuade.

"...almost uniquely to radio, most of the audience is not even paying attention to you, because most people listen to radio when they're in the process of doing something else... Hence what Wallace refers to as the importance of "stimulating" the listener, an art that Ziegler has mastered. Invariably, the times when Ziegler became really, really angry with me during the interview was when I was not permitting him to be stimulating, but instead asking him specific, banal questions that required specific, banal answers. Those questions would have made for terrible radio! And Ziegler had no idea how to answer them."
