Judging from my extremely scientific while-I'm-on-the-treadmill sampling method, the cable news networks are working extremely hard to report out a story of crucial importance: "Has the media been too hard on Sarah Palin?" Watching them try to examine this story is sadly hilarious, like watching a puppy unhappily considering whether it has, in fact, been a bad dog. But beneath the dark comedy is the incoherence. The media cannot "report" this story out. They are ...

Dafydd Thomas, Ant and Dec, Merlin, and Tess Durbeyfield will be on the front line in the battle for viewers this autumn, as figures today reveal the scale of the decline in audiences on mainstream television channels. Official Barb (Broadcasters Audience Research Board) figures compiled for the Guardian show that although the precipitous decline of recent years has slowed, viewers - particularly younger ones - are continuing to switch off in peak time. "Event" shows ...

As we've discussed already, Bill O'Reilly is pissed that people are calling him a hypocrite for bashing Jamie Lynn Spear's parents for having their teen daughter knocked up, but refuses to do the same to Sarah Palin. The latest to point out that hypocrisy was the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Cynthia Tucker. As a result, O'Reilly sent a camera crew to ambush her at her home: As Tucker stopped outside her house to pick up her mail, ...

Bill Maher is my hero! Last nights show simply reminded me of that fact. While one could argue that his acerbic tongue alienates the religious right and those voters who might be persuadable, I’ve come to the conclusion that it may be the only way to fight a war with ideological fanatics. Honestly, in the course of an hour, Maher’s program did more to refute the nonsense spewed by the GOP and their Christian allies ...

MY LAST post seems to have antagonised at least a couple of Labour-supporting readers because they object to my indulging Iain Dale’s blog memes. They also seem to have a problem with the content of my blogroll, specifically that it includes Iain’s and other blogs which are antipathetic to Labour. I knew this would raise its head at some point - my own elephant in the sitting room, as it were. One of the reasons ...

On Saturday, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is digging into its archives to re-create L.A. Flasha street-style-based exhibit from 35 years ago. As you can see above, the prescient original included a few fashion don'ts among its 400 images from that feathered-hair era. (Cobra Snake, eat your heart out.) At this weekend's party, those original images will be projected outdoors while photographers document the guests for an online galleryto be projected, presumably, at ...

Since we last shared this space, the Chicago Sinfonietta presented its debut performance at Millennium Park’s Pritzker Pavilion. Having attended a number of Grant Park Music Festival concerts in the past, I was familiar with the venue. But I have to confess, seeing our orchestra on stage at this magnificent venue was a blast! We had over 10,000 people in attendance despite the threat of rain all day. A few thoughts. The sound system at ...

Maybe it should have been obvious that the celebrity weeklies were going to politicize as soon as Hillary Clinton and her supporters showed strong resistance, during the primary season, to acquiescing to Barack Obama, thus highlighting the importance of women voters in 2008. But the heightened political importance of the magazines, whose readers are overwhelmingly female, wasn't in anyone's face until this week, when Us Weekly made waves with its controversial "Babies, Lies & Scandal" ...

Media Matters: Last week, in an apparent effort to paint Sen. Hillary Clinton as self-absorbed, the AP's Ron Fournier counted the number of times she used "some variation of the pronoun 'I'" in her convention speech. Fournier came up with 17. Media Matters checked his work, and found 21 such uses. But Fournier's point was undermined by the fact that at least 13 of those uses of the pronoun were about Clinton's support for Obama, ...

Earlier today, ThinkProgress noted that since becoming Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin has rarely taken questions from the press. The McCain campaign is increasingly shielding her from formal interviews with the media, saying that it will “do what we think is in our best interest.” Today, the Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder notes: A senior McCain campaign official advises that, despite the gaggle of requests and pressure from the media, Gov. Sarah Palin ...

Interesting look... the question of course is how to design a newspaper site so it does create more revenues... or is that possible? (The counter argument isn't that revenues need to increase with a better site, but that costs need to decline...)
