First Live Webcam Suicide (3)

World of Psychology (30) permalink
It was bound to happen. Apparently the world’s first webcam suicide has taken place, on Justin.tv, a video service that allows users to broadcast themselves from their webcams. After posting a link to his webcam on the forums at Bodybuilding.com, Abraham Biggs, 19, died Wednesday from a toxic combination of opiates and benzodiazepines. It’s not clear how many people actually watched Abraham die online, but police found his body yesterday at 3:30 pm, nearly 12 ...Contribute comment -
Again, Gulf War Syndrome Real (1)

World of Psychology (30) permalink
Although the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs concluded in 2004 that Gulf War Syndrome is a real medical illness (and not purely a psychological one), apparently a wide range of news media outlets earlier this week took the release of a new report as stating something new or different: “Gulf War illness is real,” the report concludes. “Few veterans have recovered.” Their last report in 2004 also concluded that GWS is not psychological but caused ...Shared by Jeanne (115)Contribute comment -
Women: Guarding Against Unhappiness (1)

Penelope Trunk has an intriguing blog entry today entitled, What women can do when they’re young to be happy later on. I say intriguing, because her suggestions may raise an eyebrow or two: 1. Don’t have kids. 2. Keep your career. 3. If you are divorced, get plastic surgery. Her entry goes into more depth and her reasoning for each of these suggestions, and the first two make a lot of sense (I’m a little ...Shared by Jennifer George (190)Contribute comment -

Of all the Obama transition moves, this is about the best one for the netroots. The Obama-Biden transition team on Friday named two long-time net neutrality advocates to head up its Federal Communications Commission Review team. Susan Crawford, a professor at the University of Michigan Law School, and Kevin Werbach, a former FCC staffer, organizer of the annual tech conference Supernova, and a Wharton professor, will lead the Obama-Biden transition team's review of the FCC. ...Contribute comment -
The More IM Use, the Worse Test Scores (2)

World of Psychology (30) permalink
A new study just published suggests that the more expertise one has with instant messaging (IMing), the worse one’s test scores. And, not surprising and consistent with prior research, the new study (Fox, 2008) found that IMing increases the time it takes to complete a task. The study looked at 69 undergraduates who were randomly assigned to one of four different groups: reading a simple text passage and answering some questions about it, with one ...Shared by mindspace (71) Shaun (11)Contribute comment -
You Can Only Change Yourself (4)

World of Psychology (30) permalink
One of life’s hardest lessons to learn is that you can only change yourself. Some people spend inordinate amounts of time and energy upset, angry, or frustrated by other people’s thoughts and behaviors. But to what end? You can rail against the rain or feel sanguine about the snow, but there’s not a whole lot you can do about it. Why should we, by default, believe we can change another person’s — an independent, thinking ...Contribute comment -

Learning to Multitask: Don’t Bother (1)

Right now, I have 36 windows opened up on my computer. No, I’m not doing (or trying to do) 36 things at once. It’s just that’s what happens when you give a dumb human like me the tools to open up 36 or 72 or 172 windows at once. It’s no wonder it’s so easy to lose track of where we are and what we’re doing. Welcome to the wonderful world of multi-tasking. That modern ...Shared by Tanath (225)Contribute comment -
What to Do In An Economic Crisis (1)
on
World of Psychology (30) permalink
First, don’t panic. The cause of many people’s angst and misery during an economic crisis is surely money-related, but we also multiply it by worrying unnecessarily. Worry won’t change the situation, nor bring back any money you may have lost. In fact, worry can make matters worse, increasing your stress level and causing anxiety (which in turn causes irrational thinking and can lead to poor decision-making). So the last thing you want to do is ...Shared by Tanath (225)Contribute comment -
“Young Lady, You Don’t Look a Day Over 65″: Elderspeak and Its Effects (1)

Hearing people address elderly strangers in overly familiar terms such as “dear” or “sweetie” has always bothered me. When I’m out with my grandmother and someone (generally an overzealous salesperson) goes the “dear” route with her, it always seems so patronizing and disrespectful. Whatever happened to a good old-fashioned “Ma’am”? As it turns out, new research on the subject of “elderspeak” justifies my discomfort: such informal terms of address can cause people to view aging ...Shared by Katrina (35)Contribute comment -
Congress Passes Historic Mental Health Parity Bill (1)

After over a decade of struggling and aborted attempts, Congress passed a bill yesterday that provides for equal treatment of mental health, alcohol and substance abuse disorders, ending a decades-long practice of discrimination against these concerns by insurance companies and employers. Although not quite done (funding still needs to be agreed-upon and it still needs the President’s signature), we’re very close to a historic change in the way employers and insurance companies view mental health ...Shared by Jessica (25)Contribute comment -
