A new bibliographic record distribution policy from OCLC threatens to split the library community from the increasingly large and valuable data sharing resources and applications on the Web, if it doesn’t simply fracture the library community internally. In this post, I’ll try to explain the basic issues. I hope to follow this with specific critiques of OCLC’s policy, and suggestions of useful responses. (If you’d just like a concise overview of the controversy, this Inside ...

Filed under: Security, Text, Utilities, WindowsEvery Word file can contain a fairly large amount of metadata. This is stuff like the revision logs (for tracking changes), name of the author, last time edited, and last time printed. All that information is there for a reason, but embarrassing incidents have been known to occur when people don't realize what they're sending in their metadata. If you want to avoid that, you could delete it all by ...

Interesting utility. Working in the legal industry where we take our Metadata scrubbing very seriously, I am not sure that this would work for us, but I think it is cool that the product exists for free for others to use.

People still can't seem to get enough of the Wii, at least judging from its monthly dominance of the sales charts, but one place it hasn't dominated is online gaming. Its reliance on players exchanging twelve digit "friend codes" to connect with each other flies in the face of the Wii's approach of being so easy to use anyone can pick it up and play right away. They've left the door open for someone else ...

CrunchBase Information Cookstr Information provided by CrunchBase [原文へ] (翻訳:Nob Takahashi)

Metadata in Word documents can reveal information that the creator of the document had no intention to distribute. This ranges from information about the author to comments and a unique identifying ID. It can lead to all kind of privacy leaks. Microsoft even recommends to distribute documents in paper form only on their website. Doc Scrubber is a Microsoft Word metadata scrubber which can be used to analyze and scrub Word documents. In my last post I wrote about the ingest of data into Atmos, how it maps to a policy to determine locations and number of copies, and how it places the data based on a filled-in policy tree (an LSO). My example was based on the fact that a specific user (e.g. "joe") was storing the data. Placement and movement policies can also be based off of user-supplied metadata tags. TSA-2 asked where this type ...

Or: Long live the king. What is “Code Inertia”? I’ve been interested in “code inertia” for a few years now. It should sound familiar to anyone with a basic understanding of physics: code with a lot of inertia is very resistant to change. You’d either have to be crazy, uninformed, or very well paid to try to shake the way the system is organized. I met my first gigantic and arcane system at my college ...

There has been much coverage on Panlibus and several other blogs, about the way the recently updated Record Use Policy was announced, the elements of the policy, and its ramifications for the wider library community. Apart from the need to update and replace the current ...
