The U.S. is expanding its controversial, and mostly untested, Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) system into Poland and Czech Republic, provoking Russia into making thinly veiled threats. In the wake of the South Ossetia war, these threats have assumed a much more sinister edge than before. Phil Coyle, the Pentagon's former top weapons tester (pdf!), says it's all for nothing. "The system proposed for Poland and the Czech Republic doesn't exist, has never been tested, and ...

After a test satellite launch (Iran: success! USA: failure!) this past weekend carried out with one of their many, many missiles, Iran is rolling with the momentum and announcing plans to put a man in space within 10 years. While the feasibility of such a plan remains up in the air, it of course isn't the first time such an audacious goal has been set. At this point it's little more than wishful saber rattling, ...

In a recent request for proposals, the Air Force has asked for the development of an anti-laser spray or embeddable layer than can be retrofitted on equipment and prevent it from being damaged by pew-pews for up to five seconds. The idea isn't to render the weapons "impervious" to ray gun blasts. The Air Force just wants the shield to delay the laser burning through a weapon's skin -- five seconds or so ought to ...

Filed under: TransportationWe're beginning to think the US government is playing tricks with our head. Let's see, in late 2004, a Boeing anti-missile airborne laser achieved first light; in October of 2006, a laser-equipped 747-400F was deemed ready for testing; in January of 2007, an MD-10 with Northrop Grumman's Guardian anti-missile system took off; now, we're back to the testing stage? Something doesn't add up. Whatever the case, we're being fed information that leads us ...

Those crazy Iranians, they're always up to something cutting edge in the tech world… at least, cutting edge for 5-10 years ago… maybe? The most recent incident of their tech prowess involved being called out over the use of Photoshop to doctor an image of a botched missile launch to make it look like a success. Busted! One of the missiles did not actually launch, but the Iranian government took the time (5 mins., max) ...

Clicking on a link from Jens on Twitter, I found myself reading a news report about how Iran fired some missiles and then doctored the images. What I found funny were the remarks of "photographic experts" stating that the picture "appears" to have been altered, with Gerard Issert, a technician at one of the largest photo laboratories in Paris, telling the paper: "Although the missiles weren't all equidistant from the camera, they're the same size ...

Iran has tested missiles! Not just one or two or even three missiles, but four missiles! Our crack intelligence agencies know this, because the Iranian military's propaganda arm helpfully provided the media with a photo showing—count 'em—four whole missiles blasting off into the sky. You'll regret the decision to build only three missile shelters, Israel! The scary, quadri-missiled photo of terror was splashed across front pages nationwide. Too bad it's a big phony! The photo ...

Here's what the original photo looks like: Nice work with the Photoshopping, Iran. You guys should enter one of our contests sometime. ...

Remember how the Navy fired a missile at that spy satellite a few months ago and made it go boom in one shot? Not surprisingly, they were quite proud of their accomplishment—which is why they have compiled footage of their exploits in a series of tense behind-the-scenes moments. The video after the break even shows the missile leaving the ship on its way to a victorious rendezvous with the pesky satellite. It is a definite ...
