The transcripts are all online and - if you read French - it is highly recommended reading. The first programme (alternate site) introduces the essential nature of the mobile phone in Africa. The high cost of using a mobile phone in Africa is the focus of second programme (alternate site). Africans spend between 6 to ...

Ken Banks argues in an article on PCWorld that mobile technology is showcasing African grassroots innovation at its finest. “Africans are not the passive recipients of technology many people seem to think they are. Indeed, some of the more exciting and innovative mobile services around today have emerged as a result of ingenious indigenous use of the technology. Services such as “Call Me” — where customers on many African networks can send a fixed number ...

Wired’s Gadget Lab blog contemplates the future of the mobile phone: Buttons are on their way out. Five years from now, it is likely that the mobile phone you will be holding will be a smooth, sleek brick — a piece of metal and plastic with a few grooves in it and little more. Like the iPhone, it will be mostly display; unlike the iPhone, it will respond to voice commands and gestures as well ...

If you want new wallpapers for your Blackberry cell phone you could try and find sites that are offering them, you could try and create them yourself locally with an image editor or you could use the online service BBsnap which turns Flickr images into BlackBerry wallpapers. Lots of great stuff in the viral world today (see our video ribbon above for more), but here’s my favorite so far: via the EPIC-FU blog comes this live performance from the group Naturally 7, who went all Improv Everywhere on the Paris subway with their a capella cover of Phil Collins’ In the Air Tonight. Yes, it’s from 2006 — that just means it’s so old it’s new again. And today we congratulate Indy ...

Both YouMail and MessageSling have long offered free services that let nearly any cell phone user listen to and manage their voicemail online, in the style of the iPhone's "visual voicemail." The stakes were raised this month when both also announced new transcription services, allowing you to read that call you just missed in a text message or online before actually listening or responding to it. One offers a limited free service, while the other ...

I've been using YouMail as my normal cell phone voicemail and it works well. The web site always seems to be slow to load and isn't the best I've ever seen. I also use GrandCentral and normally give that number out to most people. Their voicemail is also reasonable though the development of that tool has pretty much died. The transcription services might be useful. I really like getting SMS's when I miss a call. Having the text content could make them even more valuable.

Barack Obama said often during the campaign that his top policy priority -- before health care, before taxes, before education -- was energy. Stabilizing the economy might dominate the early months of the administration, climate change would absorb the first serious application of his political capital. But that was during the campaign. Politicians have a way of forgetting those promises when they transition to office. If this video address Obama sent to Bipartisan Governors Global ...
