One of the main characteristics of Web 2.0 publishing is the change from HTML websites to DHTML Content Management Systems. Another is the Open Source model itself, leveraging user communities for development of the CMS platforms. Content Management Systems include all of the Web 2.0 calling cards - social networking, blogs, forums, wikis, image galleries, comment threads, ecommerce, voting, social bookmarking, tags, embedded video, and many other features through extensions and modules. Consequently, the CMS ...

Most people compare blog sites and bloggers to main stream media. I am not sure I agree 100%, but lets go with that assumption. The top 20 US newspapers, or main stream media newspapers with the largest circulation currently (and also mostly by website statistics) are listed below and their blogs. Side note: In the top 20 newspapers worldwide, USA Today does not appear in the top 15, so keep that in mind. But on ...

Filed under: Developer, Blogging, Web services, Open Source, web 2.0 When it comes to choosing a content management system (CMS), the open-source Drupal is often a great choice for large or content-rich sites, because it scales well, supports multiple authors and is thoroughly customizable. The downside of all of this power is that for new users especially, the learning curve can be pretty steep. Although Drupal 6 was a huge step forward in overall usability, ...

Image via CrunchBase, source unknown Kaalga is a Firefox extension which integrates a very useful feature into your Wordpress blog editor. It basically highlights some particular words or phrases while you are writing your posts and suggests some possible links. Actually Wordpress is not the only supported platform but it works well with Blogger, TypePad and LiveJournal too. Usage is very easy: use the combination “shift + right click” (shif+ctrl+click on a Mac touchpad) when ...

Movable Type 4.2 came out about two weeks ago, and since then I've been pouring over the documentation to learn about the new features in this release. There's a lot here for developers and designers to enjoy. Things like social networking, improved templates, and better performance make upgrading an easy decision. Let's look at some of the new things we have to play with. Community Features The MT Community Solution was first introduced over a ...

It’s been a while since I last posted a Movable Type Monday (and during that time, I’ve been in three different countries!) and there’s been a lot of Movable Type activity! Most importantly, Movable Type 4.2 was released and introduced one of the largest licensing changes since the MT 3.0 debacle - the introduction of Movable Type Pro, what used to be two separate products (the professional pack and community solution) is now one, and ...

“If Movable Type was as popular, and under the same amount of scrutiny, I can’t imagine they would still be storing passwords as plain text.” upset at least one reader of “Movable Type Pro, Setting Social Networking Free, Vaporware, WordPress, BuddyPress“. His comment wasn’t polite, so I’ll answer without here without publishing it or calling attention to the comment author. While working on the TypePad and Movable Type AtomPub Exporters (still in progress), programmer Ronald ...

Replacing the graphic in the black bar at the top of each page is easy. You'll need to create a new PNG GIF image with a black background that is 46px by 46px. Name it "logo.png" "logo.gif" and upload to the /mt-static/plugins/mid-century/ directory, overwriting the existing image. The change should be immediate without having to republish your site. Update: Jason pointed out that the standard version of Mid-Century has a different graphic in the header ...

Recently, a website called Wordle debuted. What is Wordle? You can think of it as similar to a tag cloud, except Wordle analyzes words, not tags. You can see people’s blog Wordles on FriendFeed. Wordles are only graphics - you can’t use them for navigation. A nice use of Wordles is that you can quickly pick up the pulse of a website. Higher word counts show up as larger fonts, the way tag clouds do. ...
