Michael Ian Black (Stella, Best Week Ever, Sierra Mist spokesman) is one of the funniest comedians. Ever. I read a post about music on his blog yesterday and I thought I’d share it with you. People ask me all the time “what kind of music I’m into.” I hate this question because what they’re really asking is, “Are you as cool as me?” I can answer right now. No. No I’m not. No, I’m not ...

If you’re experiencing déjà vu, don’t worry - you really have heard it all before. Covering other people’s material is a mainstay in indie music and after the popularity of our first posting of covers, it seems people really enjoy hearing them. When deciding on a cover, many artists choose to cover an artfully crafted song by a master like Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, and Serge Gainsbourg. Others cover those artists who had the most ...

Owing to the circumstances by which neither Paul McCartney nor the estate of John Lennon owns the publishing rights to most of their Beatles catalog, you can hear select stanzas from the illustrious Lennon-McCartney songbook touting products and services ranging from Target department stores to Luvs disposable diapers. Perhaps this willingness of the legal owners of the songs' publishing to shop them to every Tom, Dick and Harry Incorporated is the reason there's scant need ...

Beloved music playlist hosting service Muxtape's gone offline to "sort out a problem with the RIAA," but if you've got some web server space, you can host, stream, and share your own digital music mixes Muxtape-style with newly-launched PHP web application Opentape. Opentape isn't affiliated with Muxtape in any way, but it's wildly similar, boasting a sparse, easy-to-use interface with drag-and-drop song rearrangement. To run Opentape, you've got to have a web server running PHP5 ...

Hey, I know you. RIAA lawsuits have scared you off P2P, but the iTunes DRM is both too expensive and too restrictive for your tastes, right? Then it's time you head to the web. In the past year the number of web sites linking to free downloads and streaming music has exploded, meaning there are more ways than ever to get your music fix. Today I'll highlight the best web sites—and best search kung-fu—for finding ...

Release date is unknown, but we’ll keep you posted. While I’m not a huge Conor Oberst fan, I’m a big Jimmy James and M. Ward fan and can’t think of two guys I’d rather see put something out ...

Windows and Linux only: Amarok 2, the next version of the free, open-source media player, has just rolled out an official beta release, Nerrivik. The beta of the media manager we previewed back in June, improves memory management, overhauls the add-on scripting and metadata tracking, adds gapless playback, and streamlines the interface. Center-rail widgets still seem a little rough, but it's a usable preview of what's to come. Amarok 2 is a free download; Windows ...

caUSE co-MOTION! stopped by Liz B’s show earlier this week for some pizza, beer, and ramshackle jangle pop. The Brooklyn-based 4-piece sports hum-along melodies and a stripped-down drum set, perfect for stomping out the beat sans-kick drum. Over the past few years, caUSE co-MOTION (I think we have to capitalize it like that) has released out a handful of excellent 7″s on What’s Your Rupture?, Cake Shop’s label, and CauseCo’s own Can’t Cope! imprint. The ...

Jessica Lea Mayfield turns 19 next week. You’d never figure that from listening to her: a smoky, soothing croon that’ll instantly recall Lucinda, Jolie, Gillian and Hope (that’s Williams, Holland, Welch, and Sandoval, respectively). She’s a little bit country, a little bit indie. Doc Martens with a dress. Blend it all together for her debut With Blasphemy So Heartfelt, and it should instantly put the Kent, Ohio, native near the top of everyone’s “hot” list. ...
