I’ve thought a lot about the distinction between company and individual this week. If you analyze the makeup of the company you work for, then you notice that the various business functions are relevant in your own life. In a world where, everyone is for themself, you have to understand how you can make yourself a successful business, without relying on others. Today, I examine 5 different roles each and every individual must play in ...

The Information Society as Post-Industrial Society, originally uploaded by caseorganic. In 1974, a society of Japanese futurists proposed a billion dollar digital society plan called “The Information Society” as post-industrial society. They believed that society could not continue to sustain itself if it relied on consumption and waste as top social and economic values. The project was tested in various households and included two-way communication systems that allowed users of the system to choose images ...

Ever wonder where journalists and other writers find the experts they quote in their stories? In the past, reporters counted on their own networking, and on a service called ProfNet. ProfNet lets journalists search their database of experts and contact them individually to see if they’d be interested in being interviewed. Until recently, ProfNet has been about the only game in town, as far as finding real experts is concerned. Which might be why their ...

CWmike writes "As Hurricane Gustav approaches the US Gulf Coast, IT lessons learned from the devastating Hurricanes Katrina and Rita that smashed New Orleans and other areas in 2005 are on the minds of many worried IT managers. David Avgikos, president of Digimation Inc., a 3-D digital animation software company in St. Rose, Louisiana, said, 'We don't have to be told twice.' Meanwhile, the nation's major cellular network providers say that they too are prepared, ...

Internet service provider Comcast announces it will instate a 250GB per month bandwidth limit for its subscribers starting October 1st. Ultimately the 250GB cap is higher than most users rack up—as Comcast's press release points out, it's equivalent to downloading nearly 125 standard-def movies in a month. Comcast's limit is also much higher than monthly caps other ISPs are testing, like Cox's 5 to 75GB, Time Warner's 5 to 40GB, and Frontier's 5GB. Since the ...

@ksw but your options for switching in most cases aren't that great. for instance: my only other option is to not have internet access at all. there's no phone line in my apartment. and comcast monopolizes every market they're in. if i _did_ have a phone line, it would be owned by AT&T, and that's really not any better than comcast. just slower and more subject to warrantless wiretaps. wri/sts.

Around a year ago I wrote a YouTube video downloader in GNU Awk. As I explained, I did it to explore the corners of Awk language. The key idea in writing this program was to figure out how to do networking in Awk. The original version of Awk does not have any networking capabilities, but it turned out that GNU version of Awk does! There is even a manual on “TCP/IP Networking With Gnu Awk“! ...

Yes. Many people feel it's not that bad, since 250GB is a pretty high cap. However, it sets a dangerous precedent for a major cable provider. Now there is a cap that's officially in the light of day, documented, and subject to policy. In the very near future, it will be an easy jump to introduce tiered caps based on how much you pay (like phone companies do with minutes) or even take us back twenty years to the pay-per-usage model of Internet access.Consumers need to be aware of this, voice their protests, and switch providers en masse before this becomes an industry precedent.

Which, with the purpose of having you empathize with the effort it took to finally find a solution to my Time Capsule woes--a device I bought to rid us of previous problems, not to cause us new ones--requires a break down of our rather intricate home network setup.Coming into the house we have a 20mbit tube, the router of which acts as a ...

Logitech have introduced the Squeezebox Boom, in effect the company’s Squeezebox network music player with built-in amplification and speakers. Setup is straightforward - plug into the mains, enter your WiFi password - and then you have the pleasure of bi-amped 3-inch woofers and 3/4-inch tweeters (with a 24-bit Burr Brown D/A converter behind the scenes) to enjoy either music stored elsewhere on your network or streaming from Rhapsody, Last.FM, Slacker, Pandora and Sirius. When someone asks, "What do you do?" how do you respond? If you're like most people, you respond with your title. "Well, I'm the owner of XYZ company." Or, "I'm the Executive Director of ABC." Or, "I'm a lawyer." Etc. At that point, what happens? Exactly. Nothing. Right? It's almost as if the moment we say our title, the other person's brain shuts down, breathes a sigh of relief, and then kicks back into gear ...
