Since Ray Nagin couldn’t balance his budget without raising taxes, Stacy Head showed leadership on the budget by sending out her recommendations for budget changes to find $25 million in savings. The biggest chunk of savings is being taken from: sanitation contracts ($6,343,605) reserves for contingencies ($5,000,000) CDL ($10,000,000) I don’t know what some of the acronyms in the budget are. Is CDL the Center for Learning Development? (Update: read comment below) I would have ...

Responding to a study which ranked New Orleans first in crime among a survey of 397 cities, NOPD chief Warren Riley joked, “Is it the water in the Mississippi?” Or is it, rather, something in Riley’s water which prevents him from outlining a strategy to fight crime instead of delivering one-liners? Where’s the respect for citizens of New Orleans who fought to bring this city back, including Riley’s own colleagues on the police force, whose ...

NEW ORLEANS, LA - In an attempt to further diversify her brood, Angelina Jolie has made a bold choice. Jolie recently stated on the Today Show, “I want to create a rainbow family. That’s children of different religions and cultures, from different countries. And Bat Boy is the perfect example of that.” Jolie took a moment to dab her welling eyes and then continued, “I have saved all of my children from loneliness and neglect ...

This is the last of my catching-up posts from New Orleans. I’m really hoping I don’t get tempted to “reflect” on the experience later this week, but who knows…you might be in for a real wankfest around Friday lunchtime. Meanwhile these are photos taken in the Tekrema Center For Art & Culture in the ninth ward, which was bought to be turned into a cultural center exactly one month before Katrina hit. Needless to say, ...

It can only happen in NOLA. More specifically in the Treme, while sitting in a church. Yes you read that right, I was sitting in church. It happens from time to time. Last night, I went to a CD recording for Glenn David Andrews. He decided to do a Gospel CD. He had the choir of the church backing him. A few other people as well. Like my friend Paul Sanchez, John Boutte and Troy ...

Pied Nu store. Having just returned from Prospect.1, New Orleans' groundbreaking new art exhibit (more on that in the forthcoming Holiday issue, coming out Dec. 7), I can report that the city's shopping scene is in full swing. The French Quarter doesn't offer much besides Mardi Gras masks and feather boas. So head over to Magazine Street, the city's indie-style strip. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, the six-mile stretch of small boutiques, cafes and ...

Kevin Rose sat down with Al Gore in a collaboration between Digg Dialogg and Current to talk about various crowd-sourced issues and topics. Other than some of the questions about marijuana, ManBearPig, and Futurama, I found the interview pretty interesting. Gore was impressively adroit, astute even, in his responses, showing a deep understanding of environmental issues and how they're all interconnected. I've listed the questions below, in case you're looking to hear Mr. Gore talk ...

WPA networks open to limited attack Wireless networks that use a popular form of security known as Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) are vulnerable to an attack that could compromise certain communications in less than 15 minutes, two researchers plan to tell attendees next week at the PacSec 2008 conference in Tokyo.…
