Metallica’s new album has leaked out a week or two early, unsurprisingly. It isn’t surprsing because it’s Metallica, but that it happens to most every artist these days. Some record store somewhere will sell a copy or two earlier than they should, one of those folks will share it with their friends, and lickety-split, it’s all over the Intertubes. In this case, that’s almost exactly what happened, according to Blabbermouth METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich has ...

Filed under: Odds and ends, iPhoneOnce my kids were beyond putting random technology into their mouths, I have let them play with gadgets. But what about my iPhone? It started innocently enough: a Leapster for a birthday. Then I cleaned out the garage and let them "borrow" a few antique Palm devices. Then I got them hooked on an old iBook G3 running OS 9 and some great old classics (the original "Toy Story" interactive ...

Google Chrome has been grabbing the tech world’s attention for a few days now, and its impact on the market is showing to be significant. Massively significant. Permanently significant. That goes for everything from conceptual execution to the download count. According to Hitslink Market Share, it’s already grabbed north of 1% of the browser market. And Hitwise shows Google’s Chrome page to be nearing the top 10 of sites offering software downloads of any kind. ...

There’s an interesting meme that was picked up by Duncan Riley over at the Inquisitr earlier this evening with regard to the effect of FriendFeed on traditional blogging. It’s an interesting meme and something I’ve been spending a not insignificant amount of time thinking about myself. I’m in the midst of writing a long series of long posts for my personal blog on journalism with relationship to New Media, and I’m currently working on the ...

I’m a member of Generation X, and it seems to me that when I was young the character of Uncle Sam was still used on television, radio, and in common conversation. What’s our brand now? Sam’s getting a little old, invented in the early 1800’s as he was – What’s Sam ...

There was interesting talk about venture capitalists and their role in Internet startups last week. It started with a post by John Casasanta of Taptaptap simply entitled “Fuck the VCs.” Responses from Hacker News and John Furrier, among others, led to a lot of heated debate over the role and significance of venture capital. Although I clearly cannot provide justice to the topic of venture capital in one or even a thousand articles, I did ...

I’ve been reading all sorts of starry eyed accounts as to how the new browser from Google dubbed Chrome is going to kill Windows. As someone who is absolutely dazzled by Chrome, I’m here to tell you that it isn’t the case. Certainly, we may be looking at one of the best browsers to date, particularly for the Windows platform. It’s sleek not just in appearance, but load times and memory usage. That said, it’s ...

So, I’ve finally completed my search for a new browser to fall in love with. I don’t say this as a Google fanboy, nor do I say this as someone who hates Firefox. Firefox has served its purpose, but Google Chrome (now available for download here) seems to beat it out in every way I’ve tested for so far. I did a quick screencast earlier so as to record my initial findings and give a ...

Ping.fm finally announced its open beta today and not everyone is rejoicing. When I first started monitoring these services that allow you to send messages across multiple platforms I was happy. I thought, like many people still do, that these services would unite us with friends and colleagues that are using different social networks, without everyone having to move their profiles to the same service. After watching people use these services for a few months ...

I don't go so far that I'd ignore any message that has "from Ping.fm" on it, but I did cut down the number of sites I use with Ping for this reason. Just Twitter, Jaiku, Kwippy and Identi.ca, because I actually have friends on those sites and engage in conversations there. I post to FF via their IM bot, I tend to put geekier posts there.

While autumn has not yet technically arrived, the television industry is already rolling out its seasonal debuts. Fox issued its first opener in the form of a two-hour Prison Break special on Labor Day in the US. And it’ll be in the latter half of October by the time most new series show up once more (or for the first time). In order to put some more color into its slightly tired archive, Hulu is ...

Filed under: Google On Sunday we watched a short segment on CBS Sunday Morning about Google. The company, 10 years old this month, represents the best of what came out of the dot-com bubble in the 90's. Today they are madly profitable, focused on their core services and yet, still crazy after all these years. Massages, naps and gourmet food? Why, that's the kind of hubris that brought down dozens of companies in the first ...

About the just-leaked Google Chrome browser: Google also say they’re using a “multi-process design” which they say means “a bit more memory up front” but over time also “less memory bloat.” When web pages or plug-ins do use a lot of memory, you can spot them in Chrome’s task manager, “placing blame where blame belongs.” If this is true and there's a process manager which allows you to see how many resources are being consumed ...

Recently this has been an ongoing thought in my head: Do online relationships have the same depth as relationships off line? Can they obtain the same meaningful purpose as your friends you see in day-to-day life? I have only been debating this because of the increased time I have been spending on ...

Over the weekend, a number of bloggers and the New York Times rose to defend what they termed as a number of bloggers and podcasters who were arrested in Minneapolis. Podcasting News called it “a pre-emptive attempt to stifle protest and independent media coverage.” The truth is a little bit different from the story presented there and at BoingBoing, Salon and a dozen other blogs. It’s a really attractive story, though. I was prepared to ...

This is the fist time I have heard Rasmus Lerdorf speak and it was entertaining to say the least. Refreshing would another way to describe it, I enjoy hearing real opinions and not holding back — Rasmus doesn’t hold back.Just a short background, Rasmus Lerdorf is the creator of PHP and still continues as a core developer to the PHP project.
