Getting your laptop stolen sucks, obviously. You have it loaded up with your personal information and data, and beyond losing a valuable piece of property, there's security and identity theft to worry about as well. With the new Lenovo ThinkPads you'll have a bit less to worry about if it gets stolen. That's because, once stolen, you can send a text message out confirming that it's stolen. The computer will receive it via a mobile ...

The Texas Advanced Computing Center at the University of Texas has just set up the world's highest resolution toiled display, linking together a whopping 75 30-inch Dell monitors to make one insane display setup. I mean, sure, it might be meant for scientific purposes or whatever, but imagine playing video games on this thing. Here's some raw stats for you: the 75 monitors are arranged in 15 columns of five displays each. Each display has ...

You think your expensive, custom-built gaming PC is powerful? You think you've got the hottest computer on the block because you can run Crysis at full specs? I'm not impressed. You want to see an impressive computer? Say hello to the Cray XT Jaguar supercomputer. It's got some pretty mind-blowing specs: 45,000 quad-core Opteron processors, 362TB of RAM, and a 10PB (petabyte) storage array. The whole thing cooks along at a serious 1.64 petaflops. It's ...

We all went nuts over that hardcore computer submerged in mineral oil last week, but recoiled at its $11K price tag. Now you can get your own favorite components together and submerge them in an attractive aquarium-like enclosure from Puget Systems for around $10K less than that, depending on your chosen components. Sure, there have been liquid-cooled PCs floating around for a while now, but this $315 kit makes it easy. It includes everything you ...

We took a look at the Quake Catcher Network back in its infancy and now it's making a real impact. QCN takes advantage of the accelerometers most modern laptops have built-in for protection, and puts them to use measuring seismic activity. The data is uploaded onto a central network for study, and tracked by way of a handy map. A single laptop's accelerometer can't match up to an industrial-strength seismic detector that's sensitive to earthquake ...

Sure your iPhone can wow friends and family with its variety of programs and futuristic touchscreen technology, but it still fails when it comes to one basic function—writing long documents. The new Pomera DM10 excels at this function, and only this function. Smaller and lighter than most laptops, the device fits into your pocket but features a full-function fold out keyboard when it’s time to sit down and pound out the next chapter of your ...

For it's latest trick, Microsoft's engineers have given the multi-touch Surface PC table a bartender's sixth sense. If you set your drink down on top of it, the Surface will be able to detect just how full it is. At least, if it's in a special glass. The Surface needs a little help by way of a glass with a reflective prism inside of it. Surface can then use the light from its infrared sensors ...

We're still in awe of that fantastic Battlestar Galactica PC we showed you last week, but take a look at this: Unlike that custom-built Battlestar, this one's a commercially-available PC. It looks like it has glowing nuclear fuel rods bathing in a cooling pool, good reason for its creator, Hardcore PC, to aptly name it Reactor. Its case is actually a vat of cooling oil, with the entire motherboard and all its accompanying components submerged ...

So you're in a room at 2:30 AM with 15 computers. What do you do? Well, these guys developed a screensaver that could be synchronized across every monitor and simulate a Formula 1 race car riding around the ring they form. It's the coolest screensaver since flying toasters. The good stuff happens around 1:10. Check out the comments for what's being said in the video. Thanks, guys! Via NOTCOT

According to some pundits, the simplest solution to our economic crisis is to suspend or abolish the mark to market accounting rules. For those unfamiliar. Mark to market is where a company reprices their assets on a daily basis to the most recent market transaction price. If asset prices are falling, this means that the total value of assets on a banks or other company’s books falls. When the total value of assets fall, then ...
