We’ve written before about the importance of building a personal brand for independent web workers, and others have pronounced it a “prerequisite for career success.” If you’re a believer in this idea, and you have a Twitter account, there’s an easy way to help define and promote your own brand: use your Twitter page background. I picked up on this idea from @Pistachio, though it’s been going around. The screenshot is from my own Twitter ...

How do you know whether you can trust someone you’ve run across on the web - say, by finding them on Craigslist? That’s the question Divvs is setting out to answer. Currently in alpha, it takes a relatively simple approach to the problem: the more connected you are across multiple networks, the more trustworthy you are. The result is wrapped up in a single numerical “Divvs Rating.” When you sign up, you’re given the opportunity ...

The latest online project management site to cross my radar is LessProjects, from the folks behind the LessAccounting small business accounting software. This one will be of interest mostly to software developers, particularly those using an agile process, because it focuses on iterations and spec items rather than simply tasks. LessProjects is visually attractive and features some innovative display - most notably the status display, where you move specs between stages (”Not Started”, “In QA”, ...

As reported by the New York Times, it looks like Chrysler is gearing up to offer you cars with the internet built right in. The technology was actually announced in late June, and will hook up cellular web access to a rolling WiFi hotspot. The Times is not keen on this idea, citing studies that show more distractions lead to more accidents. Personally, I think web workers are probably smart enough to not be driving ...

We’re all so used to completely free and beta Web 2.0 services that it’s a bit of a shock when one grows up and actually releases a paid version. The latest on this front is Jott, the voice-driven service that interfaces with email, Outlook, Twitter, Remember the Milk, I Want Sandy, and many more. We liked Jott as a free service; the question is whether enough people like it enough to pay for continued service. ...

Well, they’re over. With the barbarian hordes headed home and 1.3 billion Chinese looking around asking “what now?” - here are a couple links to some amazing moments captured on film during the course of the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The first is a slick collection from the New York Times complete with a bit of audio commentary, the second is a random collection of Olympic images (warning butts and boobies abound) from the Games.

We’ve covered a great many Zoho services over the years; they continue to have one of the most diverse software-as-a-service offerings. Their latest addition is Zoho Share, which brings both file storage and file sharing into play. If you’ve already got Zoho credentials from another application, you can use them to log in to Zoho Share. When you get there, you’ll find a public file-sharing site, showing you content that other people have uploaded. But ...

The online backup and storage market gets ever more crowded, but SpiderOak has some features that make it stand out. It’s not the cheapest alternative around, but considering what you get, it may well be worth paying for. They use their own storage algorithm that aggressively deduplicates data, allowing them to save everything you upload, including all versions. They provide nice clients for Mac, Linux, and Windows. And they’re cryptographically secure from the moment your ...

We first looked at Iterasi when it was launched at this year’s spring DEMO conference. At the time, we were favorably impressed with this tool for saving live snapshots of web pages in an online account, but we were a bit disappointed with the lack of cross-platform support. Well, we can get over our disappointment: Iterasi now supports both the PC and the Mac (OS X 10.5+), as well as IE7 and Firefox 2 and ...

Do distributed teams need a better solution for tracking and making decisions? Zapproved thinks so, and they’ve built a tool to be that solution. The idea is relatively simple: when you’ve got a proposal that needs to be signed off on by everyone on your team, you create it in Zapproved’s web interface. The service then sends emails to everyone with great big “Approve”, “Deny”, and “Comment” buttons. An online console lets you track the ...
