Taking my own advice about how to choose a credit card, I recently signed up for an American Express TrueEarnings card because: It doubles as a Costco card. It offers 5% cash back on gas. It offers 3% cash back on restaurants. It offers 2% cash back on travel. It offers 1% cash back on many other purchases. Those all sound like great perks, but the card also comes with an added “bonus”: an eleven-page ...

Most of the time, the talk about the housing bubble and the credit crisis and the faltering U.S. economy seem rather abstract to me, as if people were discussing a problem in Canada or Mexico. Or Norway. I’ve spent the past four years focused on my own financial situation, ignoring the outside world. The national economy often seems remote from my own personal economy. But there are millions of average people who have been affected ...

I'm having one of those days where I woke up sick (for the first time in about 10 months! I was beginning to think I was Bruce Willis in Unbreakable), and even though I'm feeling better now, I'm still using "I'm sick" as an excuse to do as little work as possible. Also, I can see Best Buy over at Masonville from my office window. It always taunts me. "Come buy a video game and play ...

I’ve been reading a very interesting article from Toronto Life’s”Money” issue (June 2008), where a panel of youngish professionals discuss their financial lives. As the below graphic shows, out of the seven panelists (read: journalist’s friends) only two of them make more than or around what they think they need to “live comfortably in Toronto”: Note: the surgical resident said that she’s living way beyond her means because, although she *only* earns $65,000, in a ...

The Night Crew is arriving. Yesterday I took a close look at my own feed in FriendFeed. Read a discussion in there about what makes you subscribe to a person. It was quite interesting to read all the people’s different views on this. I spend so much time there that there are days when I almost wish I’d never found it I’ve made a point of participating when I can, I blog here every now ...

It's been a while since I've written a blog post that wasn't a user group announcement. Here's what I've been up to: Working on a security chapter for a forthcoming in-print book on SQL Server 2008. Playing a lot of Heroscape with my boys. Helping develop the junior high youth ministry at Spears Creek Baptist Church. Getting my Be Encouraged devotionals back on track. Although I need to get the web site up to date ...

There's a little spider on my computer screen. It thinks my mouse pointer is an insect and is trying to leap on it and catch it. I played with it for like 5 minutes, me controlling the mouse pointer controlling the spider. The spider got bored before I did. I come to write a post about this fascinating story. Now the spider is following the blinking line where I'm typing in the text of this ...

Wal-Mart has started selling evil fake Vachon cakes. I’ve tried the Caramelina and it only marginally tastes like an Ah Caramel! and although the Angelica looks like a Jos. Louis, I belive that it’s actually a clone of a lesser known Vachon called a Mae West. They actually cloned all of Vachon’s products. It disturbed me. This is useful information. I like useful information. Surely these things are infringing on numerous patents and copyrights, though. ...

“What do you do with all that produce?” one reader asked recently about our garden. “Do you really eat it all, or does it go to waste?” We eat it, but not at once. Though we enjoy a lot of the food fresh from the garden, we preserve most of it for later. I’m fortunate that Kris loves to can, and so we enjoy the fruits of our labor year-round. Canning was once a vital ...

Earlier today I described net worth, and asked if it were the most important number in personal finance. Many people believe that it is. For them, it acts as a motivator, a sort of “life scorecard”. For others — and I’m one of them — net worth is just another number. As I do my finances, Quicken computes my net worth, but it seems largely irrelevant to me. I don’t even know what the number ...

Yesterday was a good day. Finally. The last month has been difficult for me, both mentally and physically. My mother has been in the hospital, I’ve been injured, and I’ve done a poor job of prioritizing fitness. If you think I’ve been whiney here, you should try living in my head! “You need to go to the gym,” Kris told me Tuesday night after losing patience with my mopiness. “It’ll make you feel better.” I ...

I got a lot of good advice growing up. I was lucky because I had a financial planner in the family, and I had a god circle of influence. I meet a lot of people now who just have no idea what they should be doing with their time and money to stay on track in the “real world”. So if I had to boil it down to ten things, here’s what I’d say: 1. ...

Nicki wants to get out of debt, but she can’t — she has a spending addiction. She’s hoping that other Get Rich Slowly readers can give her advice. Here’s an abridged version of her story: I am writing for advice on managing debt. I’ve been reading your website for the past month because my boyfriend recommended it after he noticed I spend a lot of money. Here’s a summary of my debt: Visa: $9900 at ...
