[Guest post by Raja Shekhar - he has some interesting suggestions/ideas to Indian Internet companies] For the past many years, I had some ideas regarding how to utilize e-mail service and offer various other services effectively. As I have weakness with my writing, I never put it down until last year. I wrote the following e-mail (November, 2007) to all top brass of Rediff. I just would like to share few thoughts on Rediff’s offerings ...

Comscore today released statistics for top web properties in India for the month of May 08. The numbers throw up some interesting facts. For one, Google has overtaken the Numero Uno position from Yahoo that it had held since the start. Last year they were neck to neck with roughly 14.5 monthly pageviews (Yahoo slightly higher ), however Google sites saw a growth of 35% as against Yahoo’s 27% notching the top position. It grew ...

One of the surprising developments at Proto was the announcement by Rediff (which incidentally was the platinum sponsor for the event) of its developer platform by opening up its APIs. The platform will allow developers to create an applications economy on Rediff on the lines of Facebook & Open Social. The move is laudable - it speaks of Rediff’s confidence in its own engineering prowess, though it can be argued that Rediff hardly has the ...

So, Rediff finally realized the importance of a platform released the Rediff Platform. As an incentive, Rediff plans to give financial grants, which you can see quite boldly on its homepage. It is great it has happened finally, however I wonder if it is a bit too late. Rajiv Dingra has more on this. Releasing API seems to be the “in” thing today, but rarely do we see any focused effort on it. The key ...

Rediff, one of the top online portals in India and one currently listed on the NASDAQ stock market, has evidently followed the past year progress of third-party developments within Facebook closely. Now it wants to stir a similar amount of interest in its own set of properties as well. Announced at Delhi’s Proto.in startup event, Rediff officially took the covers off its own developer program, called, plainly enough, The Rediff Platform. The reason for the ...

Signs of a successful company is agility!, i.e. how quickly it can embrace change. Rediff, I am glad to mention is opening up its verticals and user base to developers, transforming itself from a pure content portal to a platform on which other businesses can operate. Code named ‘Sociali’, the platform will enable developers to host their apps on Rediff (iShare to be the first one), allowing users to do everything from flirting to browsing ...

Rediff is taking the threat from Orkut and Facebook very seriously - they do understand that they can’t build another orkut/FB, so integration is the way to go. Rediffmail has integrated news feeds from Orkut and Facebook into the mailbox enabling users to stay up-to-date on the activities of their friends/family on the sites. Once you signin to your Rediffmail account, you can provide your Orkut/FB details and Rediff will automatically import news feeds from ...

Rediff has launched Train Fare search that enables users to check availability of seats with fares, check PNR status, get detailed schedule of trains including real-time arrival and departure status by using a simple search engine query. I believe Rediff is right in it’s positioning as a utlity search engine (few days back they launched product search). The site is nicely done (very neat interface) and as of now, it doesn’t allow ticket booking (Indian ...
