Filed under: downloads hacks, misc hacks[Cory Wright] shares a tip on how to reboot a system with a failed hard drive remotely. The magic SysRq key is a linux kernel feature that lets you perform a number of interesting operations. If you're working on a remote system where the disk has failed, you won't have access to the reboot or shutdown commands. You can issue keystrokes to the magic SysRq device in /proc though, so ...

One of the reasons I bought an iPod touch in November, as opposed to a cheaper, vaster iPod classic that I could use to store all of my music, was that it held out the promise of being an interesting device to fit into Apple's slowly-expanding range of devices that hang off iTunes. I don't just mean in the obvious "iTunes organises your music" sense, either, but by using iTunes library sharing and the music ...

Sure, these little robots might not be able to drop-kick or head a soccer ball - but that doesn’t mean they’re not cool. This mini robot soccer (or football depending on your homeland) game looks like lots of fun for you and your friends when you need a break from slaving away in your cubicles. The set comes with a pair of mini infrared remote-controlled robots which can shuffle the ball along the ground and ...

“Like any remote, the designers were adamant about keeping the remote’s button layout as simple as possible. But with the DVR’s numerous features, the designers needed to create lots of extra buttons. To keep things straight, each button needed to have a distinctive feel, giving the ability to control the remote without even looking at it, which Newby described as a “key Braille-ability” surprisingly helped by the “blank finger parking spots between keys” that were ...

Filed under: Software, iPhone, App StoreJugaari's iPhone debut, Teleport (iTunes link), is a new VNC client for mobile remote control of a Mac or PC (not the super-awesome pseudo-KVM app). It's a $24.99 investment, and I don't know many people who are going to dish out twenty five clams for an iPhone utility, but I know plenty who are curious about it and frustrated about the App Store's lack of any "try before you buy" ...

But before I go into that, I will first detail whwat makes this possible. On the 2nd of June, 2008, the Windows Sideshow team over at Microsoft released a program, a “developer preview”, which ...

The idea of controlling your DVR via your iPhone is nothing new, but this MythTV iPhone remote allows Linux DVR users to get in on the fun of using their phones as visual remotes. It's got a real-time program guide so you can easily set recordings, plus the standard channel and volume buttons to flip around channels with. The only thing we have to complain about is that the UI is fairly ugly and not ...

CamTim is a hack that'll let you use any digital camera with a remote control for time-lapse photography. It's not super-easy, but it won't make you cry (probably). It's basically a board you program to buzz the camera's remote button at whatever interval you want. Using a ZigBee module, you can also set it up to run wirelessly, which is pretty handy for long-term spying... on birds. [ZigGrid via MAKE]

I’m without an Apple TV but John Gruber of Daring Fireball fame has stumbled upon a new facet of the Remote app that no one else seems to have realized before. Apple doesn’t seem to be touting this little factoid either, but you can use your iPhone/iPod Touch instead of the janky on-screen non-QWERTY keyboard as your Apple TV keyboard. Wowzers. What you’re typing is reflected on-screen. That’s pretty neat.
