The community-run Ubuntulite project aims to extend the useful life of aging, under-resourced hardware, as might be found in schools or nonprofit organizations. Accordingly, instead of using a high end, video-hungry desktop environment, such as GNOME or KDE, this parsimonious OS incorporates the Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment (LXDE), a platform being honed for use on nettops (aka mini notebook PCs) and MIDs (mobile Internet devices).<!--break--> LXDE provides “moderate” performance on systems with Pentium 2 processors ...

If you were feverishly anticipating a cellphone this year, it was one of two phones: the iPhone 3G or this phone. The BlackBerry Bold is RIM's most powerful, polished handset ever. With 3G, a glossy new UI, a real web browser, serious hardware and an almost beautiful body, the Bold doesn't redefine the BlackBerry experience, but it does elevate to the highest point its ever been. Let's be clear: If you hate BlackBerry phones, you ...

You know how challenging it is to live with diabetes. Those days when it seems nothing is going right. You can't control your blood sugars, then you get a bleeder when changing an infusion set and your meter runs out of batteries at the worst possible time. The countless times when the possibility of complications weigh heavily on our hearts. The frustrations of not being able to eat something without first having to do some ...

Although Wilson tested the Kindle in bed, on the toilet, I had the chance to use it on vacation and found myself reading a great deal more than I usually do. Unlike regular books, which cause me to fall asleep pretty readily after less than 50 pages, I'd finish about 300 pages in a stretch, with no eyestrain in dark rooms or in the sun. I suppose it felt a lot more like reading on ...

The Gadget: The Treo Pro is a 3G-equipped, Windows Mobile 6.1-running, touchscreen smartphone that's just a sliver bigger than the iPhone 3G. Completely redesigned, it's Palm's best looking phone in years. The Price: $550 (Unlocked, no contract) The Verdict: In terms of design, performance and non-OS features, this is the best hardware Palm has ever made. Though my personal dislike of WinMo has me wishing it ran the PalmOS, the truth is that this is ...

In a bit of a surprising move for Palm they launched a second Windows Mobile Professional device, the Palm Treo Pro, just about a month and a half after the Treo 800w. I expected to see a GSM version of the Treo 800w, but that hasn't happened and we don't know if it every will. I posted an unboxing video and some responses to my Q&A with Palm last week and finally the NDA was ...

Lee Lefever creates these wonderful videos that take what can be complicated tools and concepts, turning them into easy to understand primers. His first (or least first massively popular) video was RSS in Plain English. So this video on Google Reader is a great companion. Ele ...

3D printing has been around for a while, and has traditionally been used to create small prototypes of larger products (or parts of products). The folks at ShapeWays are bringing 3D printing to you, and you don’t even need to know how to use 3D modeling software. From the ShapeWays website you can use the Creator tool to design and personalize a few stock items, like the LightPoem above, which turns your words into a ...

These Wi-Fi radios have come a long, long way. Case in point, I have an old Linksys WMLS-11B from almost five years ago that requires me to spin around in a circle two times, add a single drop of blood to exactly 6.3 ounces of room-temperature tap water, and paint the Toyota Camry logo on my chest backwards before I can get the thing to reliably stream music wirelessly. Though you can make realistic looking dino skeletons with the pieces, you can snap them together into all kinds of creative monsters. Mix and match with the alien bones for all kinds of cool creations. There is a video review on the way. Skeleflex Review.

CedeFTP is a FTP file browser for windows mobile professional AKA Pocket PC devices. It has all the features one would expect from a regular FTP client that one uses on the PC. The CedeFTP is fast, reliable and easy-to-use! The CedeFTP 2.5 flaunts the classic look. It does not have soft keys or fancy graphics. But, that does not matters much to the mobile professional who generally use the stylus to get their critical ...
