Filed under: Microsoft Xbox 360, BusinessEach week Jeff Engel and Geoff Brooks contribute Counting Rupees, a column on the business behind gaming: This past week, my 360 finally gave up the ghost. It began with an occasional hard freeze, and a day later was freezing every two or three minutes - a tell-tale symptom of impending red rings of death. Unfortunately, my Xbox exhibited all of the symptoms except an actual series of red rings: ...

I'm tired of this. This sense of permanent discomfort with the technology around me. The bugs. The compromises. The firmware upgrades. The "This will work in the next version." The "It's in our roadmap." The "Buy now and upgrade later." The patches. The new low development standards that make technology fail because it wasn't tested enough before reaching our hands. The feeling now extends to hardware: Everything is built to end up in the trash ...

Keep this in mind if you're console-shopping on Black Friday. Via Consumerist comes word that Sam's Club, dealt with courteously and calmly, replaced a red-ring-of-death Xbox 360 with a working unit, let the poor guy keep his hard drive so he didn't lose his games and gamesaves, and, since all they had were cheaper bundles, refunded him the difference in cost. And, I might add, did all this without the BS replacement plan that some ...

My 360 RROD on the weekend. It's a brick at this point. Gonna send it in this week. I'm glad it happened before my warranty expired - but I think I had a year to go on the 3 year one for this anyway.

Save the swimmies! (Photo: futurowoman) I never thought I’d visit a sperm bank. Perhaps it was flipping a motorcycle at 90 mph on Infineon Raceway. Perhaps it was tearing my Achilles tendon in jiu-jitsu practice, then getting thrown on my head. Maybe having my scuba mask fill with blood at 120 feet underwater in Belize? That could have done it. Or perhaps is was just crossing the 30-year age threshold and having friends who didn’t ...

Flickr’d You know the upcoming New Xbox Experience that has so many people excited for some reason? Turns out that Microsoft call centers are bracing themselves for NXE-induced red rings of death. So while you’re gaining a [fancy?] new user interface you may also be losing an Xbox 360. Fun! It’s like this: Microsoft is afraid that its Frankenstein of a machine may have trouble “taking,” in a sense, the NXE update. The result of ...

Wheeler Farms, near Toledo, Ohio, created a Sarah Palin corn maze in a 16-acre field. As you can see, it looks like a pretty shitty maze. Sadly, that didn't stop me from getting lost and circling her lapel for two hours. A face from ears: Palin is carved into cornfield [boston] Thanks to Richard, who would look devilishly handsome as a corn maze.
