In returning to the history of Saudi Arabia in preparation for my recent lecture on the Islamist Entanglement and struggling to define the precise relationship between the United States and its so-called ally, it finally struck me what the two countries have colluded in creating. In essence the United States has adopted a feudal relationship with the Saudi monarchy. What is worse, rather than champion its distinctive founding ideology of individual rights, the US has ...

The head of the UN General Assembly just called Israel an “apartheid” state. In other words, Israel is emblematic of evil in the world. I’ve finally realized what the problem is: Israel has a mixed population. Think about it: Iraq expelled her Jews and hounded her Christians into obscurity. Saudi Arabia makes it illegal to be Jewish or Christian — so there are no Jews or Christians, making it a nice, homogenous population. Iran also ...

Four young Saudi women are challenging taboos by forming their own rock band. They're called the Accolade, after a pre-Raphaelite painting that founder Dina (band members gave their first names only to protect themselves) likes because "it shows a woman being satisfied with a man." Though Saudi women can't perform in public, and the Accolade currently practices in secret to avoid punishment by the religious police, they hope play real concerts someday, perhaps abroad. “It’s ...

Mos Def The article in this morning’s Times on an all girl rock band in Saudi Arabia called Accolade is a window into a major public diplomacy advantage the U.S. could employ in the Obama administration. “In Saudi, yes, it’s a challenge,” said the group’s lead singer, Lamia, who has piercings on her left eyebrow and beneath her bottom lip. (Like other band members, she gave only her first name.) “Maybe we’re crazy. But we ...

Electronics are often so ugly and inanimate; why not make them do multiple functions like this combination wireless router and vase? Finally, electronics you can really call green! No doubt the flowers will last so much longer in that energizing bath of EMF. The designers say that “The STC Router successfully bridges the gap between lifestyle and technology with it’s flower vase functionality.”...

Love this idea, (and thus, the router) - don't know about you, but I keep getting more and more electronic doodads taking up room in my house - I can't hide them somewhere, as they need air flow, so yes, it's time to make them part of the decor, rather than an eye sore in it. Here's hoping we see more of these! :)

RussiaRussia is lurching towards a major economic crisis, experts predicted yesterday, following news that the price of oil had slumped to under $50 (£33.72) a barrel. The collapse was likely to have catastrophic consequences including a possible devaluation of the rouble and a severe drop in living standards next year, they said. With oil prices tumbling and his credibility at stake, Russia's prime minister, Vladimir Putin, yesterday insisted that the economy was still robust. The ...

Guy Kawasaki posted a poll on via his SocialToo service that asks “How much would you pay to use Twitter?” More than half (around 53%) of respondents, presumably all Twitter users who follow Guy, said they’d pay at least $5/month. The last thing I want is for Twitter to start charging, so I want each of you to take that poll and say “$0, I’d rather see it go away.” Crunch Network: CrunchBoard because it’s ...

Somali pirates yesterday seized a Saudi supertanker carrying up to 2m barrels of oil worth around $100m in an audacious attack several hundred miles out to sea. Two Britons are among the 25 crew of the Sirius Star, which was captured 450 miles south-east of the Kenyan port of Mombasa. The US navy, which has been tracking the ship, said last night it was close to anchoring in the notorious pirate haven of Eyl on ...
