CNN is reporting that a Saudi supertanker, owned by Saudi ARAMCO, was seized by pirates Saturday. Piracy in the Indian Ocean is growing at a rapid clip. Navies from the US, UK, and Russia are patrolling the region—over a million square miles in extent—but haven’t been able to contain the problem. Perhaps we’ll be seeing Saudi naval vessels escorting the country’s own ships soon. The Royal Saudi Navy hasn’t had much of a chance to ...

As if finding a job wasn’t hard enough for Saudi women, what with society’s doubts about the propriety of women’s working, once they do get jobs, they have no legal protection against sexual harassment, reports Arab News. Saudi society has a way of turning the victim of harassment into the perpetrator, saying that ’she asked for it’ by merely seeking to earn an income. The piece cites several instances of harassment, quotes a member of ...

The Washington Post carries this piece from its Saudi correspondent on how young Saudis are trying to put religion back into Ramadan and move it away from the more social aspects it has taken on over the years. Ramadan is supposed to be a month of spiritual cleansing and reflection. Young Saudis think popular observance has moved too far away from that goal and needs to get back on the spiritual track. There’s certainly some ...

Arab News reports on new anti-smoking laws ready to be approved by the Cabinet of Ministers. The laws prohibit smoking in public places such as schools, sporting events, restaurants, offices, mosques, and factories. It bans the selling of cigarettes to minors. There was an attempt to raise the tax on cigarettes by 200%, but that move was defeated because it required approval by all the GCC states due to customs treaties. I’m not sure how ...

This Associated Press story is getting wide dissemination. I suspect that it will lead to the retirement of Sheikh Luhaidan. The Sheikh gained notoriety when he encouraged young Saudis to wage jihad in Iraq, though he later changed his mind about that. Here, I think he is going way over the line of what the Saudi government will find acceptable. He is authorizing the murder of satellite TV owners—a group which includes many members of ...

The Washington Post reports that the dour uniformity of the white Saudi thobe is facing revolutionary pressure from a new fashion designer. What’s more, the ruling family is throwing its support behind him. I found it interesting that the designer, Yahya al-Bishri, claims that the white thobe is a relatively recent development to Saudi culture and that previously there was much more variety in men’s wear. He reportedly showed early photographs to the King to ...
