Well, almost. The David 3D Laserscanner software can do some of the job using equipment you probably have lying around your shop. You need a handheld laser, a calibration backdrop, a good webcam and the David-Laserscanner software running on a Windows PC. Yes, we did say "handheld laser". The system requires your hand and arm to be the scanning actuator. Admit it, we all want to be robots, don't we? But that is the key ...

Amendments that restrict civil marriage rights of same-sex couples - such as Proposition 8 that recently passed in California - have led to higher levels of stress and anxiety among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender adults, as well as among their families of origin, according to several new studies to be published by the American Psychological Association.

Looks like digital photo frames are beginning to move from nice-to-haves to actually quite useful: Skyla's Memoir photo frame has an in-built 600dpi scanner so it'll digitize your hardcopy photo archive for you. It's got a 1GB memory, apparently good for about 200 4 x 6-inch prints (the maximum size the scanner can take). Plus it's a respectable 800 x 600-pixel 4:3 ratio screen, and has two USB ports so you can sync the frame ...

I came across Linq and the new Lambda Expression classes in .NET 3.0. I thought, it would be a good idea to dynamically build a lambda expression from a math string, something like: (a + b) * 1.5. The string is parsed into a lambda expression and then is compiled into a delegate. Then, if you well, you can call the delegate to get the result of the formula. So, in other words, we are ...

If you have an old flatbed scanner laying around or you've decided your scanner is a useless gadget, repurpose it weekend. The industrious tinkers at Make magazine have put up a tutorial on turning your scanner into a primitive camera. The results have a distinctly spooky appearance, almost reminiscent of vintage daguerreotype photographs. The project doesn't require taking apart the scanner or permanently altering it in anyway, so you can experiment freely without actually sacrificing ...

Those natty guys over at SymbianV3.Com have posted an application for Nokia mobiles, which effectively turns them into an optical character recognition scanner via its camera. This could be the best use of a Nokia since someone turned the humongous N95 into a paper weight. In luddites terms the software takes a photo of a page from the Nokia phone’s camera, and then extracts the text from the image into an editable format – as ...

Back in September I asked readers of The SPC Blog if they could recommend any good reading on the commercial and economic aspects of supplementary protection certificates. There hasn't been much of a response as yet, though I've been sent copies of two short articles by Mike Snodin and John Miles of (formerly Eric) Potter Clarkson. Both pieces are published in RAJ Pharma and they share the same title: "Making the Most of Paediatric SPC ...

AU Optronics Corp has unveiled a new LCD panel that doubles as a fingerprint scanner. Each pixel is equipped with 4 optical sensors, so a 320×240 screen would have a scanning resolution of 640×480. They have also experimented with different sensors, such as UV. You can see an LCD panel that detects and displays the UV index above. Why did they use a secondary display to show the data though?
