OK, OK... so Dean Kamen actually dreamed up the Segway in the first place and other amazing things, so he's pretty clever. But then so is the guy who's put together this Arduway out of an Arduino controller board and some Lego Mindstorms motors. It senses its position with a gyro, and balances pretty much like the real thing, only smaller. Maybe good for giving your pet mouse some 21st Century transport? If you're impressed ...

[Joe L] sent in the Arduway on the tipline. It is a robot made of Arduino and Lego NXT components based on the Segway. A software library to control LEGO NXT motors and a few sensors he used is available on SourceForge. This robot does a good job of balancing itself while moving forwards and backwards. There is a YouTube video of it in operation after the break.

The idea behind the Segway is a good one, but between the Presidential accidents, Polo games and supreme laziness, the Segway has developed a serious image problem. When people think "Segway" they think bike helmet-wearing super-nerds having an asthma attack while whizzing down the sidewalk at 12 mph. Not so with the following gadgets. Unlike traditional Segways, these personal transport vehicles only make you look tool-ish.

Balancing yourself on a skateboard is a tricky issue, especially when you’re a novice. In times like these, you wish technology would rear its head and offer you an easier alternative. And that’s precisely when designers rack their brains and come up with the most effective solution. Like this self-balancing “No-Snowboard,” for example. Based on a Segway, the skateboard requires no human effort for balancing. And interestingly, it doesn’t throw you off-balance if there is ...

When does a new technology cross the line from niche to mainstream? For new modes of transportation, maybe that line runs across a polo field. Since 2004, Segway enthusiasts in California have been organizing matches of Segway polo. The group has grown into the International Segway Polo Association, which hosts an annual championship tournament called the [...]

While his ability to rotate 360° at the elegant flick of the Segway's stalk seems to be a bit compromised, what this mod lacks in maneuverability it makes up with pure steamrolling surface area. The guy extended each axle to accommodate six more tires, thus becoming the only dude I know of who's been able to actually increase a Segway's macho factor, outside of the Chinese military, of course. Segway by itself? Dumb. Segway with lots of big tires? Dumber. This monster BigFoot Segway has six full-sized tires and can barely turn but just think of how many cars you could crush if you could make this thing go over anything higher than a four inch curb.

(11) 2008.07.03 — Awesome! Yesterday we saw in action the Large and Medium models of the Segway-killer Toyota Winglet. Here you have the Type S, which stands for small but, according to Toyota, could also mean Sports. Looking at the video, it makes sense: basically, this thing seems to allow for faster, more agressive driving, achieving a behavior similar to inline skates. Someone should boost their engines speed as soon as they arrive. [Toyota]
