We’ve mentioned in previous posts how in-camera metering can be very unreliable. It can meter the scene differently even if the subject and lighting do not change. In the series of photos below, I left the camera at evaluative mode and took three shots at different focal lengths. I shot in AV mode with the ISO at 400 at f/5.1/6, f/5 at 30mm1/8, f/5 at 70mm1/6, f/5 at 105mmYou can see that the camera’s meter ...

Great article - as I use primes I tend to meter from a big area of something in the same light as I can't zooom in and out, and tend to use AEB just in case so I can spend the time shooting rather than thinking.

I’ve now got all of the feeds set up and running at the Blog Bash website for those looking for more robust blog coverage of the Para USA blogger training. Since the site still primarily serves as an event planning site not meant to show a ton of posts, I have set up a category page which will feature all of the posts with excerpts so you can easily peruse the many posts going up ...

We’re down to one month on the Summer Rifle Match for the Gun Blog Rifles Competition Series. I haven’t yet gotten any entries, but that’s OK, since I figured everyone else was waiting until the last minute like I am, though I am going to try to shoot both smallbore and high-power, both open sights, when I get back from North Carolina.

Cameras today meter a scene using Through-The-Lens (TTL) technology. This means that it measures the intensity of light as it enters the camera through the lens. The problem is that there are two ways for light to enter your camera. One is through the lens and the other is through the eyepiece.Excess light can enter the camera’s viewfinder if you take a shot with your eye away from it, like when you shoot with the ...

It's been a while since we've featured some delicious high-speed photography here on Geekologie, but at long last the wait is over, and I'm proud to announce: I am NOT THE FATHER! *high fives* Anyway, yeah, high-speed photos of shit getting shot up. There's a couple more after the jump, including a perfectly good can of Pabst Blue Ribbon. Which, while saddening, led me to the development of an awesome new product. Bulletproof koozies, bitches ...

In Part 1 of Macro Photography 101, we discussed what a true macro lens is. In Part 2, we will be discussing depth of field, lighting, and specialist lens in Macro Photography.DEPTH OF FIELDWe all know that when you use a wide open aperture then you will get a shallow depth of field (DOF) and vice-versa. One thing we also have to keep in mind is that the closer you are to your subject, the ...

Macro photography can be a confusing topic for many beginners. For one thing, almost all the lenses nowadays have the word macro printed on the barrel. Does this mean that it’s automatically a macro lens? What is a true macro lens? These are some of the topics that we will tackle in this article.MAGNIFICATION AND REPRODUCTION RATIOThe first thing that you will need to understand when studying the subject of macro photography is magnification and ...

update and LAME ALERT: David writes on his site that “My recent postings on the Platypus workshop have been taken down due to proprietary issues.” That’s pretty freakin’ lame (not naming names, ahem) that someone would force him to take that down!!! David Nolan of Multimedia Evangelist had the extreme luck to attend the Platypus Bootcamp at the Maine Media Workshops. You can benefit from his lessons, since he’s written a four-part series on his ...

It's extremely simple to learn how to play, and follows a classic arcade pattern. The premise is that, as a Failbot aka Blizzard employee, you arrive at ...

Filed under: News, Imports, WiiWare On the 20th of this month, the Japanese iTunes Music Store will be invaded by the Space Invaders Get Even soundtrack. The album, which costs 1,500 yen, contains new orchestrated and electronic music from Taito's house band Zuntata. Some of the songs on the album apparently won't be featured in the game, which to us suggests remixes. While it's not terribly likely we'll see this album in the U.S. -- although ...

One important thing that separates snapshots from creative portraits is learning to work with directional light. Directional light can mean anything from off-camera lighting set-ups to a window with sunlight streaming through it. Below are some examples on how you can make directional light work for you.FORM AND TEXTUREForm and texture are basic elements of design. Form relates to how an object exists in the real world and how it occupies space. It is the ...

As newspaper still photographers transition to shooting more video, they can get overwhelmed by all the non-creative tasks they have to do. With white balancing, audio monitoring and sequencing chores at hand, many new videographers forget to be creative with their video cameras. In a recent request for proposals, the Air Force has asked for the development of an anti-laser spray or embeddable layer than can be retrofitted on equipment and prevent it from being damaged by pew-pews for up to five seconds. The idea isn't to render the weapons "impervious" to ray gun blasts. The Air Force just wants the shield to delay the laser burning through a weapon's skin -- five seconds or so ought to ...

Fight scenes in movies are just really long sequences. Since the last two episodes you should be shooting sequences all the time now. I’m going to show you how you can make two people who have actually no idea how to fight, look pretty good in a fight scene. It all has to do with choosing specific angles that hide and enhance what you want the audience to see. And to prove it, I’m going ...

Kidding, it's not really a DeWalt edition rifle, it's just an M-16 some guy modded to look like one. Apparently, it's supposed to look like a nail gun. I'd just picked up a new (to me) M-16 and was in the process of fixing it up a little. It needed new furniture anyway, so I sourced the safety yellow stock, guard, and grip. Then, I went down to the DeWalt factory service place a few ...
