Filed under: MessagingReady for some truly staggering figures? VeriSign has reported that it delivered some 95.4 billion text messages between US carriers in the first six months of the year, setting a new record. Single-day and single-hour records were also set in the same period -- 648 million and 42 million, respectively -- proving that Americans are finally warming up en masse to text messaging as a totally valid means of communicating, probably thanks in ...

Did you know that Google has dropped its “Send to Phone” free SMS sending service? I didn’t…until I happened to go try to use it today and found myself greeted with this message: “Send to Phone” had let you fire off unlimited texts to any U.S. mobile number through either a Web interface or a Firefox/IE toolbar. Google quietly retired it within the past few weeks, though, making no formal announcement outside of the notice ...

TweetSMS has been launched today after around a week of internal testing, the launch was scheduled yesterday, but apparently they had some hiccups which lead to delaying the launch to today. As reported by ArabCrunch last week, TweetSMS enables Twitter’s users who no longer can get SMS notifications from Twitter in countries outside USA, Canada, and India. TweetSMS messages are paid for by credits. 1 Credit = 1p (1 pence in Great British Pounds), which ...

Last week, I highlighted Ed Vielmetti’s thoughts about adding covers to the list of overdue books you have checked out, as well as the ability to text the location of an item to your cell phone. Both of these are enhancements that I, as Patron 2.0, would very much appreciate my library providing. In the comments on that post, Jason from the Iowa City Public Library gave us a working example (working in an Innovative ...

So asks Tim Worstall on his blog: So, all mobile phones have SMS or texting on them. Is there any way to turn that feature off? Specifically, a way to turn it off so that anyone who tries to text you knows that it didn’t go through? And that it won’t? As much as it might wind me up, I can see that some people would really like this feature on their handset/mobile account. (Thanks ...

CNN are are reporting that mobile phones are helping keep voting and vote counting in check — through independent communication.? In the piece, Mike Steere gives an example of journalists being able to use their mobile handsets to call their radio/TV stations to independently verify that voting is proceeding as expected. The impact of the medium of mobile is, in these types of situation, phenomenal. Fantastic.? There’s a lot more to read in Mike’s piece.

Sen. Barack Obama's promise to supporters that they would be the first to know of his vice presidential running mate via text messaging turned out to be a bit of an ambitious promise. The Democratic presidential candidate got scooped by the media on his own announcement. Late Friday the national networks started naming Sen. Joseph Biden as Obama's pick but the Obama campaign didn't dispatch the text message to Obama supporters until 3 a.m. EST ...

Barack Obama’s now-famous text-message announcement of his VP pick reveals something about the candidate that should really worry the Republicans. What it reveals is not that he’s a smart technologist. If he was, he would have known that sending 10 million SMS messages at the same time is pretty much guaranteed not to work; it’s not designed for that. What it does reveal is that this is probably the smartest marketing campaign we’ve seen in ...

Twitter can now send you reminders at intervals you request. Just direct message the timer user on Twitter: something like d timer 45 pay parking meter and you'll get a private message back in 45 minutes that reads "pay parking meter." If your direct messages go to your cell phone, this is a really nice way to set up reminders on the fly. Twitter's quickly transforming from a way to broadcast what you had for ...
