As we watch the economy do what economies do - have growing pains and adjust to challenges - it becomes ever more apparent that doing things the old way just won’t work anymore. That is true of many of the old ways, especially when it comes to how companies advertise and grow their business. It is my opinion that the return on investment (ROI) for traditional advertising will continue to shrink, even as companies using ...

Now this could potentially be big. Turbine is working on a social networking system that will be connected to their Lord of the Rings Online MMO, where information concerning people’s avatars will be posted and where people will be able to socialize in a Facebook/MySpace kind of way. It’s supposed to be available later this year. Information from Alice and from Gamasutra. Tags: LotRO, Turbine, Facebook, social networking

Several weeks ago, Digg made online headlines when it banned several dozen of its users, some of which were among its most highly ranked contributors (including Reg “Zaibatsu” Saddler, who by some metrics was the #3 Digg user of all time). On Digg’s blog, the company explained that the bannings were a result of script abuse, although some observers found this explanation to be unconvincing. Shortly afterwards, Digg announced that it had raised $28.7 million ...

I was caught up in the race to Digg supremacy for a number of months this year; cracked the top 800 Diggers list based on stories promoted to front page. I've walked away from social news for the most part because I'd rather be creating content than promoting it, but I'm still a bit bothered by some of the things that Digg has done to some of its core users over the past year. One quick thought: Digg would be dead in the water without advertising....

The Internet radio and on-demand streaming music service Last.fm is host to over 5 million songs spanning numerous independent and big-name studios and publishers. So today’s unveiling of a partnership with LyricFind to insert some 800,000 lyrics among Last.fm’s song catalog isn’t a full sweep. Yet it includes many popular artists old and new, from The Beatles to Pearl Jam to Radiohead, enough to satisfy plenty of listeners. However, a concern for listeners may be ...

Want your Firefox 3 browser to be location-savvy? Mozilla is making that possible with the release of Geode, an “experimental Firefox add-on” intended as something of a holdover until Firefox 3.1 arrives with support for the W3C Geolocation Specification. The purpose of Geode is to give current Firefox installations the option to specify location, determined through Skyhook’s Loki Wi-Fi mapping service, with varying levels of exactness, to be manually chosen by the user. If you ...

Yahoo has launched a new version of its Calendar service. To describe it briefly, it has been designed for those who like keeping things as simple as possible without having to sacrifice utility. Looks-wise, it’s safe to say Yahoo’s engineers were inspired at least in part by Apple’s iCal program. The layouts for both are quite similar. Performance, meanwhile, is pretty much on par with most any other top-tier Web-based calendaring service. You’re able to ...

When I met Miles 'LG15' Beckett last summer, prior to the launch of Kate Modern, one part of our conversation stayed with me. Discussing the launch of the Bebo drama that was to go on and become so successful, I asked him what the plot line for the show would be like. To my bemusement he responded in the vaguest terms, as if it wasn't terribly important. I followed up with an enquiry about where ...

MySpace has partnered with Hewlett-Packard (HP) to bring print-on-demand capability to the popular social network. That’s right. Those embarrassing photos of you Xeroxing your rear end at the office Christmas party aren’t just on your receptionist’s MySpace albums anymore. They’ll be printable so that even those who haven’t found the Internet yet can see them. In all seriousness, this means that MySpace, home to over 4 billion images already, may fast become a hub for ...

In a recent press release from Gartner, the headline states that “many social software projects fail due to IT managers not having a well-defined purpose to succeed”. Now that’s seems a little harsh to the IT world. Unless Gartner is just trying to be controversial or come up with an angle that will attract attention to their upcoming conference, IT managers are being unfairly blamed. I would place the blame for failed social software projects ...
