Part Three in an Eight-Part Series on Amazing Artists of the World In 1990, a new species was born. It was not formed from the cross-breeding of existing creatures. It didn’t evolve from a simple to a complex organism. It sprung from the hands of a Dutch artist whose imagination and technical knowledge somehow turned plastic yellow tubes into graceful beach faring creatures. (image via: Strandbeest) Theo Jansen calls his kinetic sculptures “Animari.” The creatures ...

Das neue Projekt von Banksy: ein zynisches Zoogeschäft in New York. “The Village Petstore and Charcoal Grill” zeigt gefangene Delphine, manikürte Hasen, Hotdog-Schlangen, Fischstäbchen-Fische, Baby-Überwachungskameras und Chicken-McNugget-Kücken. Warum Banksy jetzt Tieraktivist ist? “New Yorkers don’t care about art, they care about pets. So I’m exhibiting them instead. I wanted to make art that questioned our relationship with animals and the ethics and sustainability of factory farming, but it ended up as chicken nuggets singing. I ...

High-speed photography is a fascinating way to capture the images that we don’t often get to see. So many amazing things happen in the blink of an eye - moving too quickly for us to see more than a blur and the aftermath. Using clever equipment and quick shutters, these talented photographers freeze time and illuminate one single critical moment. If they time it just right, high-speed photographers can catch a moment of impact, explosion, ...

You Fuckers!” UPDATE: Auch Mercedes Bunz denkt über das “Danach” nach: “Wenn jetzt die Finanzmärkte wackeln, der Konsum einknickt und die Arbeitsplätze und damit das Geld wieder Mangelware werden, ...

An anonymous English artist by the name of Slinkachu creates artistic scenarios on the streets of London. He uses little characters, they are in fact miniature figures used for professional architecture and train projects, fabricated by Preiser, and altered and adapted by the artist. It is quite impressive the thought and planning to each scene… i.e. the artist has to put this on the street without anyone seeing him. View more artwork here: Little People ...

London street bomber and STOLEN SPACE gallery impresario D*FACE unveiled his grand homage to the unholy marriage of “Street” and Pop Art with his instant sellout “Apopcalypse” solo show at the upstart BLACK RAT PRESS GALLERY in London last Saturday. Forget, of course, that a global recession predicated on a string of worldwide bank failures and a near-total American housing market collapse is upon us, this is England, where the Pound is, well, “sound as ...

Anyone smell a rat?… Headline grabbing British street art star BANKSY grabbed even more attention this week when two massive new murals featuring his trademark rat character were unveiled in downtown NYC. The enormous spots were not the artist’s usual sneak attacks, however, as both images appeared on legally rented walls and were painted—in uncharacteristically plain sight over the course of several days—by commissioned Manhattan sign painters COLOSSAL MEDIA. Of course this has raised the ...

As the once underground world of “street art” continues its triumphant march through the public consciousness as the aesthetic zeitgeist of our times, mainstream media has played the enabler, documenting the phenomenon’s rise at every turn. This week sees the NEW YORK TIMES’ astute MELENA RYZIK following Supertouch’s own SHEPARD FAIREY through his recent bombing run in San Francisco in support of his current “Duality of Humanity” show at WHITE WALLS gallery, chronicling the aging ...

A 26-year-old artist and rape survivor has created a sign for the Williamsburg, Brooklyn block where she was assaulted. The artist, who spoke to ArtCal via email, has chosen to remain anonymous because her case is still in court. She says she hopes rapists who see the sign will think about the possibility of their loved ones being assaulted and "realize that the act they commit is unforgivable, and is an obscene expression of power ...

One of the limitations of photography has always been the camera’s limited field of view. Even the fanciest and most technologically advanced camera can’t match the ability of the human viewer to see the entire landscape around them. Since the birth of photography, photographers have been looking for a way to make the photo viewing experience more dynamic and inclusive. Panoramic photography is the usual choice of photogs who want to give their pictures a ...

tank in lake (Part One in an Eight-Part Series on Abandoned Vehicles and Buildings) Like abandoned buildings, abandoned vehicles can have a profound effect on those who see them. They represent the sadness of losing those comforts that we’ve come to rely on, and the end of someone’s dream. Every abandoned car was once a brand-new machine, a source of pride for its owner. Every abandoned bus once carried schoolchildren or city shoppers to their ...
