Social news community Mixx is seeing healthy growth ever since they left stealth mode. They got a nice traffic spike last May after CNN integrated ‘Mixx it’ buttons in their articles, roughly doubling their number of unique monthly visitors to nearly 1 million, and it appears their new community building features aren’t hurting them either. A screenshot from their Google Analytics account shows that the Digg-competitor is gaining traction, receiving over 5.8 million unique visitors ...

Infoaxe is coming out of stealth mode today with (yet another) alternative search engine / social bookmarking tool, focused on indexing your own browsing history rather than the entire web or what you proactively indicate is important to remember for later. Installing the infoaxe toolbar (works with IE and Firefox) basically enables users to ‘record’ public web browsing sessions with just one mouse click, after which they can search through their personal history from the ...

Microsoft has released the latest set of data for its controversial Live Search Cashback program, which offers users monetary incentives to click through and buy goods from the ads they’re shown. The results? Things seem to be looking good from a ROI perspective, as users are responding to the ads more than they typically do on other search engines (though this isn’t very surprising, as they are being offered money). More significant is the fact ...

Awesome! "This makes the Live Search user base very appealing to advertisers, as it shows that they’re more likely to purchase goods than their Google counterparts."This is only one piece of the puzzle, but it is a key piece: disrupt Google's business model.

London based uberVU is about to launch a discussion-tracking product that will aggregate comments, Twitters, FriendFeed comments, trackbacks and other information about any URL (like a blog post) on the Internet. There’s real demand for this. Any given blog post, for example, may have lots of comments and trackbacks (links from other blogs discussing the post). But the conversation can soon splinter off as side discussions spring up on Twitter, FriendFeed, or other blogs. uberVU ...

I really do enjoy watching aggregating technology get meta-aggregated, then aggregated again. Very abstract.

By Chris Cummins and Brian Heiler Not to sound like cranky old timers, but we here at Topless Robot believe that the golden age of trick-or-treating was the late 1970s/early ’80s. To quote Ray Liotta in Goodfellas, it was a glorious time. Kids everywhere would get dressed up as their favorite characters and hit the streets in search of candy and frights aplenty. Then it all changed thanks 1982’s Tylenol poisoning scare and the subsequent ...

Ron Conway, one of Silicon Valley’s most prolific angel investors (and he was also an early investor in Google), wrote an email yesterday to the CEOs of his portfolio companies. In no uncertain terms he outlines a bleak immediate future, and gives advice to his startups. It’s the same advice, actually, that he gave in 2000 during the tech meltdown that was then happening in real time. Lower your burn rates to get at least ...

It looks like Walmart has soft-launched it’s DRM-free MP3 store. The company decided to ditch its DRM approach, but then got into hot water with consumers once they figured out that Walmart was going to be taking down the servers they used to manage all the DRM rights. No servers, meant that they wouldn’t be able to listen to the songs they had legally purchased. So Walmart had to reverse course and is now keeping ...

TechCrunch was not impressed initially, to say the least. Although it has come a long way since launch, it looks like the young venture behind ...

At BearHug Camp, I spent about 10 of the 30 minute executive visitation trying to pin down Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, and Alex Payne on when exactly Track and IM would be back, and in what order. Turns out the IM part isn't coming back; it's been moved from Broken to Build. Evan Williams delivers the bad news with a ...
