We call them “computers”, but the software and hardware are overwhelmingly concerned with storing and retrieving data. Yesterday’s Disk Performance research fit into a larger context in the QConf presentation; a survey of all the levels of storage that make up a modern system. Summoning the mythical boogeyman of the Fairness Doctrine — which would require broadcasters to provide a variety of political views on publicly-owned airwaves — Fox News host Bill O’Reilly warned last night that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi “wants total control” over radio airwaves and would seek to reinstate the policy. He claimed that the media features far more liberal voices than conservative, citing newspapers, NPR, and…the Internet: O’REILLY: A good case can be made there ...

Sql Server 2008 is here, and Microsoft is busy working on the next release. But let me tell you, there are still tons of Sql Server 2000 out there. So far this year, I spent well over 2/3 of my time working on Sql Server 2000 projects. Clients know they need to move to the next version, reluctantly. One of the major roadblock is SSIS. Companies have made huge investment in that technology and there ...

Mark your calendars: Sunday’s the day to cash in on Dr. Pepper’s long-standing challenge to Axl Rose. The soft drink maker had said back in March that it’d give a free can of Dr. Pepper to “everyone in America” if Rose’s Chinese Democracy album actually came out in 2008. The album — currently available for free streaming at MySpace Music — officially comes out Sunday. So that means Sunday, you can grab your free can ...

One reason math is so satisfying is that it allows you to see order in what is otherwise the randomness of life. For instance, the famous Fibonacci sequence, which shows up in countless natural patterns like this: Math is also satisfying when it helps you understand what parts of life truly are random or "chaotic," rather than adhering to patterns you haven't yet figured out. The most obvious example is the minute-by-minute movement of weather ...

The best (and worst) thing about a garden hose is that kink that stops the flow. I love that kink. And so does the crew that’s whipped up the “Music Flow.” MP3s that spew forth from a faucet with matching earbuds and controls. Flow on! Music flows from the line, As water flows from the hose. The supply of water stops whether the hose are pressed. If pressure is applied by hand to the earphone ...

Just some time ago this was a very secured place and none even has ever dreamed to make civil photos here. Now all the machinery, missiles and equipment were removed and went away in random direction so now no any guards are around and people can make shots of what it was a launch site before. read more....

Google has gone live with a big change to their result pages, at least for those of you who are logged in (if you’re not seeing it yet, it may still be rolled out for your Google Account). It’s called SearchWiki, and lets you edit the position of the results you’re getting, and add comments to them. SearchWiki was in experimental stage for some time now. Specifically, you’ll be seeing three icons accompanying results, and ...

I did some research on storage-system performance for my QConf San Francisco preso and have numbers for your delectation (pictures too). Now is a good time to do this research because the hardware spectrum is shifting, and there are a bunch of things you might mean by the word “disk”. I managed to test some of the very hottest and latest stuff. Methodology Even after all these years, I still like to measure with Bonnie. ...

The is the first part of my Modest Proposals for Change. Change I can believe in. Get Congress out of Washington. Greater Washington is one of the most segregated, dysfunctional cities on the planet. Having our elected representatives spend the majority of their time in a toxic place cannot be good for their outlook. Even worse are those that cocoon themselves within the padded and happy bubble of private schools and swank surroundings. They go, ...

Still in beta, and actually still fairly stealth, Sling Media’s new portal looks great, is loaded with full episodes of current TV shows, movies, featured channels and plenty of content from well known web production houses. Not saying too much here (per their terms of agreement), but suffice it to say the new Sling portal looks awesome and will give Hulu a significant run for the money for the mainstream content dominance. Oh, and you ...

If cryogenic science is perfected, it promises a future where humans can travel to the future just by freezing themselves. But cryogenics entrepreneurs have more mundane ideas for bringing freezy suspended animation into everyday life. Scenario Land imagines that someday home cryogenics products could perform important tasks like freezing your pets for easier travel. John Heylin, a future blogger at Scenario Land, envisioned the Cryotranz pet carrier, which would give pet owners the ability to ...
