Of course none of this will change the fact that we use terms like social media as a way to sell the way we behave on the web. Just don’t think that we are doing anything new and wonderful.

I have always believed that the power of the Internet has been in the social aspect. Steven hammers that here. :)

Let me start this off by saying that Chris Brogan is one smart person and I have a lot of respect for the man. He is one of the brightest; and best in my opinion, writers on this idea of social media. However I noticed something over the past week or so - his tone; or maybe his set of concepts around social media has been shifting. Previously I had the impression that much of ...

For almost the past week Hugh MacLeod has been posting some of his best cartoons drawn on the back of business cards that I think he has drawn for some time. They are all about poking fun at the idea of there being some sort of profession called social media specialists; and I have been looking forward to every new post of his hoping for some fresh cartoon harpooning this fake profession. Now before you ...

So guess what the hot topic today in social media was folks? Yup that new evil invading Twitter called Magpie which allows you to use a 3rd party service to monetize your Twitter stream of consciousness. All the heavy weights are weighing in with their opinion about the service. You know the folks like Arrington, Valleywag, Jeremiah and one of my favourite bloggers David Risley. The interesting thing is that they are all pretty well ...

Image via Wikipedia If California prosecutors have their way, Digg founder Kevin Rose could easily be found guilty of felony computer hacking for widely-reported actions he took yesterday. Kevin Rose set up a Twitter account Tuesday pretending to be his cold, which amazingly accrued during the previous 24 hours over 787 followers: @kevinscold: hanging out w/@kevinrose, making his head hurt and nose stuffed up… hopefully he’ll take me to @digg tomorrow. It’s mildly amusing, but is ...

This saturday we have the first Eclectro party in De Unie in Rotterdam (which itself is pretty amazing). It’s the first offline event for something (a group of people blogging) that until saturday does only exist online. To Eclectrofy this evening we started thinking about doing something extra with the location. How can we make the place visually and interactive exciting as well. Without making it too difficult to use or showing computers. This reminded ...

By Steve O’ Hear, Blogger, The Social Web, ZDnet It appears that micro-blogging service Twitter has removed the option to delete a “tweet” once it’s been published, making the service a haven for digital litter–the trail of information about you or things you’ve said that perhaps you shouldn’t leave lying around the Web. Publish a status update on Twitter slamming your boss–at 2 a.m. in the morning after a night out at the pub–only to ...

You know there are times when I think this whole social media rigamarole is getting to be nothing more than a collection of self-righteous puffs. There seems to be an underlying belief that as commentators and opinion writers that we must be above everyone else, that we are purer than everyone else, that we would never sully ourselves with such mundane and dirty things as products. God forbid that we should even think of taking ...

The last week has been an interesting time in the tech blogosphere as the echo chamber has hit an all time reverberation level. We have seen supposedly professional news oriented bloggers go on a riptear showing how unprofessional they can be. We have had bloggers try and take a stance on something they should have stayed out of and in the end caused themselves some pain. Yet some other bloggers have taken a moment to ...

I have been using FriendFeed from almost the start and it took me a little while to get my head wrapped around how it worked. In the end though after a second try I found that it became an integral part of by time spent online. For me it became almost news central for tech related stuff as most of the users at that point were still made up of the early adopter crowd and ...
