Wow! I remember seeing these tracks as a real sort of industrial waste eyesore when I lived in NY. Nice to see they're doing something with them.

I want to take Obama at his word, and make C&L possibly the first leftwing blog to actually try to WELCOME our conservative readers. To all our conservative readers, I’d like to know your thoughts about being a conservative, how your life has changed under Bush, what your hopes for the future are with Obama, how you think liberals could help reach out to conservatives (and vice versa) to help heal the huge gapping rift ...

Are things so bad that robbers are resorting to stealing containers of coins? The Suffolk Police tell Newsday that when three masked and armed men robbed an East Patchogue home yesterday, the robbers specifically made sure to steal a "Poland Spring water jug filled with coins." Around 2 a.m., after assaulting and robbing the 51-year-old homeowner outside (the homeowner just came back from a late night trip to buy milk), the robbers "raced...toward" the 21-year-old ...

Apparently the container was a 5-gallon jug that had some paper bills in it, too, and the son had been saving money in it for a while, but fleeing a robbery with a 5-gallon jug full of coins and bills? Really?"

Brad DeLong has some thoughts on where Democrats can go on their Man Date: This degree of Republican partisan entrenchment in the court is–in a word–bizarre. It is not a good thing. Moreover. this Supreme Court forfeited any claim to be due deference from the other branches of the government when it prostituted its office to install George W. Bush as president eight years ago. It then established a new constitutional principle: that if an ...

Badly behaved schoolchildren are set to face alternative punishment in the form of foot and head messages as a means of controlling bad behaviour. A London-run company called Bud-Umbrella will work in 60 primary and 14 secondary schools, offering the alternative therapy to improve unruly children's behaviour.Lambeth Council in south London is to reportedly spend £90,000 next year sending the reflexologists into the schools - despite the fact there is little evidence such treatment improves ...
