PDC 2008 happened not long ago so I get to write another “what’s new in GC” blog entry. For quite a while now I’ve been working on a new concurrent GC that replaces the existing one. And this new concurrent GC is called “background GC”. First of all let me apologize for having not written anything for so long. It’s been quite busy working on the new GC and other things. Let me refresh your ...

Apparently, the Obama-elect administration is going to meet with the Iraq Veterans Against the War. Now, while there may be one or two decent and well-intentioned folk among them, as whole, they generally are charlatans and liars (hence their dire need to testify to Congress NOT under oath). TSO at This Ain't Hell is all over them. Here's one of their posters. "Send McCain back to his cage in Hanoi" Mad as hell, are you? ...

Is Design Elitist? (1)

I have maintained for some time that Design ( and Architecture) and all these practices are in the main elitist! I say in the main as there exist more inclusive projects and perspectives such as - Design for the other 90 percent and Architects without frontiers. Though I have got into arguments defending these projects/ enterprises. When asked - but dont these people live i the west and locate their projects in the developing world? ...

I think the expectation for people working on projects like design for the other 90% to not be this way is strange. I think most people working anywhere are governed by the culture of their industry and the context of their workplace. Designers are designers, they lead different lives in their different locations, but they are always designers. I guess the point I would rather be made is that the elitism of design and architecture is not that relevant because it is a persona built for the context in which we know these people. I do however wish that the value of designers and architects could be more attributed to their value in human happiness (of their clients or end users) instead of some other version of their importance or economic status. I think that is where the elitism begins to make problems.

Apple Special Event for September 2008 has ended. Steve Jobs has done his good job on presenting the new products. Nothing is really mind-blowing here. But from his keynote slides, I can see several interesting effects. For sure, we can employ those cool effects to work for our presentation slides. There are several keynote effects that I like from his presentation and hopefully, I've successfully clone those down to my keynote. These animations are as ...

Don’t mess with Knitted Robot. By the look in his eyes, he’s right off his face. Robot pattern by Jess Hutchinson and knitted by Lily Dustbin. Check Jess’s gorgeous illustration and toy design here. My favorite is this square based orange fellow. I want him! There’s an assorted collection of hand crafted robots over at Geek Crafts, some more elegant than others ;).

As the rock underground slouched towards mainstream acceptance in the late-’80s — well before the grungequake made such baby steps seem trivial — the Pixies fired a much-needed salvo of strident aggression and willful nonconformity across the bow of left-field music. Although the quartet became the influential darlings of college radio, the Pixies proved to be less hallowed institution than primary inspiration (to, among others, Nirvana) and prep school, readying its two principal figures — ...
