From bad to worse: latest figures on global greenhouse gas emissions. “The 38 countries that pledged to restrain their emissions of climate change–inducing greenhouse gases, most notably carbon dioxide are failing... most industrialized European nations as well as China and the U.S. (which have not agreed to any emissions' reductions) have been spewing more carbon dioxide since 1990—up in total some 403 million metric tons of CO2e from 2000 levels. The UNFCCC cautions that emissions ...

Oh hey, welcome to 500GB laptop drive announcement party Toshiba. Shame you had to come dressed in the same 9.5-mm slab, 2.5-inch 3Gbps SATA interface, 1.4 watt idle power draw, 5,400rpm spin, and 25dB hum as everyone else in the room. Pretty, but still embarrassing. No full-disk, hardware encryption but at least you can take comfort at besting some (but not all) of your competition by actually shipping your drive in December.[Via Impress]Filed under: StorageToshiba's ...

It has always struck me as a little contradictory that while one of the government's primary goals is to build citizen awareness of various services, issues, initiatives and opportunities, at the same time many government communications and publications (than need to be) are protected under rigid copyright disclaimers.I've even seen situations where government agencies require that organisations formally request permission before linking to their websites, although this is almost totally unenforceable and contrary to one ...

Yesterday Gartner reported that 85% of companies surveyed in May and June acknowledged they are using open source software (OSS), and the other 15% plan to start in the next 12 months. OSS has clearly gone mainstream. The top reason cited was lower total cost of ownership. I suspect that OSS adoption will broaden and deepen quickly if the economic slowdown persists. But as companies gain experience, other compelling reasons for using OSS will become ...

A mensagem interessa tanto a ...

Proofs from THE BOOK的第12章给出了Cauchy定理的一个非常精巧的证明,并在这一章末尾给出了一个更加简单的可活动多面体(上图),它是由Klaus Steffen构造出来的,只含有14个面和9个顶点,现在已经证明是“最简单”的可活动多面体。
