The Federal Communications Commission has just voted to open up the so called TV Whitespaces for UNLICENSED use (FCC press release here). This is incredibly good news for rural America in particular but actually for all of America. It's not as important as the election the rest of us in the US voted in today – but this action is a very, very big deal. Just a few of the benefits: Within a year there ...

Researchers have successfully found not only a delivery method for gene therapy that can reach every muscle of the body in a large animal model, but a therapy that will work on both skeletal muscle, the type found in arms and legs, and cardiac muscle, such as the heart. Dongsheng Duan's team of University of Missouri researchers has now proven that this delivery system will reach everymuscle in larger animals, such as dogs. In 2004, ...

Correction del New York Times (October 30, 2008) An article in some editions on Wednesday about Fordham University’s plan to give an ethics prize to Supreme Court Justice Stephen G. Breyer misspelled the surname of another Supreme Court justice who received the award in 2001. She is Ruth Bader Ginsburg, not Ginsberg. The Times has misspelled her name at least two dozen times since 1980; this is the first correction the paper has published.

It's been an absolutely brutal two weeks for McSame. On September 15th, the Gallup tracking poll had him up 1. That, as it would have it, was the same day McSame said the economy was "fundamentally strong." Since then: Surrogate Fail, 9/16: Fiorina says neither McSame or Palin could run a major company. Neocon Fail, 9/17: McSame rejects Spain as an ally. Wall Street Fail, 9/18: Not the best time to be a pimp for ...

Mark Kleiman: Magnitudes: Total value of the bailout bill: $700 billion. Net cost to the taxpayer: unknown, but much less than that [$100 billion]. Drop in the value of U.S. stocks today when the bill failed to pass: $1.3 trillion. That's not quite the right comparison. There is also a loss of $2.0 trillion or so in lost wages corresponding to the lost expected profits that are reflected in the stock market declines. The House ...
