Michael Slawin arrived at my lunch with Chris Miller and Matthew Homann to deliver me some gooey butter cake. This, it turns out, is a St. Louis treat. It’s what whoopie pies are to Maine. It’s what poutine is to Quebec and the eastern part of Canada. Essentially, besides probably being 12,500 calories, it is a regional delight that reminds people of being from somewhere. The gooey butter cake came from Park Avenue Coffee, by ...

High-speed photography is a fascinating way to capture the images that we don’t often get to see. So many amazing things happen in the blink of an eye - moving too quickly for us to see more than a blur and the aftermath. Using clever equipment and quick shutters, these talented photographers freeze time and illuminate one single critical moment. If they time it just right, high-speed photographers can catch a moment of impact, explosion, ...

At the JFK airport in New York there are Kosher vending machines that serve hot food, like this Kosher Cafe Hot Nosh 24/6 where you can buy a potato knish, onion rings and fries. There are other machines that served hot dogs. The idea behind these vending machines is to be able to provide Kosher food to travelers in areas where it may not be available. Here’s a New York Times article from last year ...

The little streets of Malacca had all sorts of interesting temples and stores full of antiques and curios. I don’t normally talk about curios in such high regard. Curios in other countries always seem better than curios in your own country. And thus, we end this diatribe on curios.

With gas prices are spiraling out of control, Americans are going wild over green cars like never before, but there are far more to the eco- (and wallet) friendly world of alternative fuels than just the Prius. From strange conversions by bold individuals (a truck that runs on used coffee grounds) to hundred-year old toys for the rich (sail bikes in Cape Cod) to the fastest diesel car in the world (JCB’s Dieselmax), the desire ...

Luggage Pile, courtesy of Sundazed/Creative Commons 2.0 It’s no secret that our luggage doesn’t always agree with our travel plans. I realized this when I considered how many times my luggage has decided to go somewhere else, misses the flight, or just returns home. It would seem that my luggage has it’s own travel plans on a regular basis. If you travel by air, and everyone does sooner or later, it’s important to realize that ...

Within minutes of stepping into Starbucks and getting my regular drink, the lights went off in a power trip. This, I assure you, is quite an uncommon phenomenon; at least in Singapore. In no more than 5 minutes later, the lights went off again. Whoops! Another power trip! Hmm… This reminded me of the only time while I was in India that the lights went off. At least only the lights went off. I have ...

What are the cheapest ways to get from Newark, Delaware, to New York City? I'm a research assistant at the University of Delaware and as part of a long and wonkish I-95 corridor project, we've decided to produce a map or informational pamphlet letting students know the cheapest ways to get from here (Newark, Delaware) to New York City. A few things to keep in mind: 1. Any mode of transportation is fair game (air, ...

Chile’s disaffected ‘Pokemones’ don’t care much about politics. They’re too busy having sex. From Newsweek: The teens call their public orgies ponceo. On a typical Friday afternoon in the Chilean capital of Santiago, hundreds gather in a leafy urban park for a few hours of sexual experimentation. Surrounded by passing strollers, they trade partners multiple times—mostly engaging in anonymous rounds of oral sex. When the party is over, no contact information is exchanged. Same-gender interactions ...

By Luke Anderson How many of you have ever gotten stranded in an airport due to a canceled flight? I’ve only dealt with that on one occasion, and I can tell you that it’s not fun at all. Those chairs aren’t all that comfortable when you’ve been stuck in one for 8 or more hours, and you don’t get a lick of privacy. If you’re really worried about having a place to sleep, you could ...

Each of these “bells” is really a stone cage that houses a seated Buddha statue, facing outwards. At this time in the morning, you can take little flashlights and peer inside the cages. It’s all very eerie and fun… In the distance, you can see a few volcanoes poking through the mist.

Just take a right at…. huh? (Street signs in Wales) In the wee morning hours of September, I took my first trip to Wales to experience The Do Lectures, which is held in tents in the Cardigan wilderness. Not only did I get to sleep under deer skins in a high-end geodesic dome (not kidding), I got to dropkick my brain reading Welsh and drink the best peppermint tea I’ve ever had. Fun times indeed. ...
