Bikes with chains may be becoming an endangered species. Belt-driven bikes, which were introduced by boutique bike makers a couple of years ago, are just starting to hit the mainstream. Trek has introduced two new urban bikes for 2009 with belt drives rather than chains, and they look pretty sweet. The benefit to a belt drive system over a chain and shifters system is that it won't stretch and break over time like a chain, ...

Commuter bikes were front and center at last weekend’s Trek World 2008 dealer show in Madison, with the singlespeed District stealing the show. This flat bar urban screamer features the Gates carbon belt drive that shaves nearly 280 grams from the weight of the bike, according to Trek. No lubrication is required for belt drives, which “produces a ninja quiet ride.” The District has several interesting details including color matched Bontrager Inform saddle, rims, accents ...

Posting twice in one day is rare for me, but a friend who was at the “backstage” event at Trek World 09 the last couple days sent me these photos of the Trek District (top), Fisher El Ranchero (middle), and new Trek Soho (bottom). The El Ranchero is just a design study, but the others are going to be production bikes. Anyway, I couldn’t wait until tomorrow to pass them along, so here they are.Update ...

Filed under: Transportation Fat kids want cake, skinny kids abstain, right? Whatever philosophy you subscribe to, chances are you'll only see the world's fittest stopping by a Trek Stop. This curious vending machine is currently parked in Madison, Wisconsin and enables cyclists to nab spare parts (an extra tube, patch kit, water bottle, etc.) or healthy snacks while rolling by. As for installation? Prepare to get greasy.[Via AutoblogGreen]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

teh awesome!! That pole is a work stand to hold your bike. And I'm sure there's free air, of course. As for dirty hands -- I stow a pair of latex gloves in my pouch.

If you happen to be in Madison, Wisconsin during the next few weeks, check out the “Trek Stop” cycling convenience center. This test unit will be set up for a month outside of Machinery Row Bicycles. While it is in place, you can stop by anytime to put air in your tires or buy basic small items like a tube, patch kit, water bottle, energy bar, chain lube, etc, out of the vending machine.Kudos to ...

This is an awesome idea because I've found bike stores, like art stores, to generally be closed at the times when I roll by them on a work day.
