It doesn’t take much to fool the human mind into thinking it’s seeing something other than reality. To the casual observer, the subjects of these photographs look like incredibly detailed miniatures. But if you look closer, you’ll see that this isn’t play time - these are real-life scenes made to look like tiny models through the magic of tilt-shift photography. (images via: Casa Pauline and Nathan Snider and BurlingameBarley) We humans like a bit of adventure, as a rule. We drive fast, we hang glide, we even eat bacon with breakfast. But for the most adventurous among us, nothing is better than living in a dangerously precarious house. These houses are perched high on cliffs and mountains, giving their residents thrilling and, we would imagine, somewhat frightening views. (image via: Bornemania) Among the most famous ...

Call it lightpainting, light drawing, or light graffiti - whatever the label, the work of NYC duo MRI is fun, energetic, and chock full of awesome. Using a Canon 5D, a wide angle lens, 10-30 second exposures and lots of crazy lights, the team creates amazing images in which streaks and streams of light take center stage. WebUrbanist recently had the opportunity to talk to Michelle McSwain and Ryan Warnberg, the two halves of MRI, ...

Photographers know countless methods to add interest to to their images through tricks of light, angle, color and more. One of the oldest ones in the book is to double the image with a reflection - to create a kind of mirror image of the original within the same frame. A well-planned reflection can display perfect symmetry or a uniquely distorted one that can be captured only a single time before it shimmers away. Bridges ...

(images via: Wikimedia and Wickedblog and House Alive! and Freshome) As the world’s population density climbs and cities become more crowded, it’s becoming necessary to fit even more housing into existing urban areas. Even in places where overcrowding is not an issue, home buyers are looking for housing that more ecologically friendly, use fewer resources and contain no wasted space. These concerns have given rise to some surprising new trends in housing: the extremely tiny ...

Abandoned places are great for letting the imagination run wild. Whether they were once used for housing or work, buildings and sites which have been forgotten and allowed to fall into disrepair are fascinating glimpses into the past. Some of the most haunting abandonments, however, are those that were once used to entertain and educate - filled with vast once-vibrant gathering and learning spaces.

Due credit goes to Tim Walker over at Hoover’s Business Insight Zone, for pointing out the need for a sub-prime primer. However, as the parent of a four-year-old and a four-year-old who just inherited an additional $540 billion in bailout this week (on top of the $840 billion that everyone already knew about,) I felt the need to write a primer that speaks to them. Actually, any primer that speaks to them ought to start ...

Unlike freeze-frame photography that captures a tiny cross-section of a moment, time-lapse, long exposure and motion blur photography shows a series of moments. They can be a few consecutive microseconds, moments spanning several years, or anywhere in between. Rather than an ultra-fast shutter speed, time-lapse and motion blur photography use a very slow shutter speed or multiple images to convey time and/or movement. Motion blur photography often features one part of the picture in perfect ...
