Total compensation for venture capitalists and other private-equity managers was up 32.3 percent in 2007 over 2006, a new study reports. How can this be? Private equity is just as bogged down as the public markets by the credit crunch. For the Sand Hill Road contingent, there wasn't a single tech IPO in the second quarter. Acquisitions were down too. If VCs don't unload their companies on someone — public investors, or larger companies — ...

The CBC ran a headline that's sure to please many Canadians - "New cellphone carrier launching in 2nd half of 2009". That new carrier is Globalive, who bought $442 millon of the Canadian wireless spectrum in the recent auction, covering every province except Québec. They aim to start next year in five cities: Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, and Ottawa. Of course, building out a national cellular network requires lots of money and IT World Canada ...

Guy Kawasaki, the guy behind Art of the Start, has some video clips with tips on raising venture capital for early stage startups. He takes 15 minutes to deliver his "top 5" tips: Make sure VC is right for you. Most deals are suitable for VC for reasons that have to do with VC and not the company. Capture attention in 15 seconds. There's a long story about Hot-or-Not to deliver this point. Offer a ...

Yesterday I traveled to Philadelphia to attend the DreamIT Ventures Funding Day. Eleven startups presented their ideas and pitched their concepts for funding. Several hundred people attended the event and the event went off without a hitch. Most of the presentations were very good and I was actually quite impressed with many of the company ideas. Here is a list of the companies who presented plus a link to our coverage: Vuzit (our coverage) DropCard ...

In another sign that interest in mobile advertising is perking up, Chicago-based mobile marketing company Vibes Media announced $15 million in a first round of funding today. Never mind that it’s still hard to point to a single company that has been able to go public based on mobile advertising. That’s coming, supposedly. The privately held decade-old company plans to use the funding to acquire smaller fish in the market, as well as to scale ...

I talked a while back to Gleb Kaplun, a Russian investor from St. Petersburg, about their company Web2People. We followed up on that and I got really excited with the possibilities it creates. Web2People is a venture company established to help young innovators start their business with the very basic resources and fundamentals. The focus on the innovation is on Internet services and web applications. Web2People offers companies the physical office space and resources to ...

Hank Williams points out that the front page of the Angelsoft website is really great. For those that don't know Angelsoft is a free web service that many angel investors use to manage their deal flow. We've looked into using it to manage our deal flow and I wish we could use it, but we don't currently. Hank and his commenters mostly focus on the twittervision style map on the front page that shows the ...

Angelsoft has released a new service which allows entrepreneurs to seek funding from their network of angel investors. Angelsoft is used by almost 400 angel investor groups to manage deals from the pitch through funding and until exit. Now they have a new service that allows entrepreneurs to "insert" their deal into the pipeline. The service sounds promising.

There was interesting talk about venture capitalists and their role in Internet startups last week. It started with a post by John Casasanta of Taptaptap simply entitled “Fuck the VCs.” Responses from Hacker News and John Furrier, among others, led to a lot of heated debate over the role and significance of venture capital. Although I clearly cannot provide justice to the topic of venture capital in one or even a thousand articles, I did ...

A lot has been written over the past few days about Judy Estrin's concern about declining innovation in the USA and Silicon Valley. While I agree with some of the quoted issues underlying the declined such as the quality of our education system and how the Federal research budget is administered, I (like others it seems) believe that innovation is alive and thriving in the US. But as the NY Times article quoted Vint Cerf ...

Bueno, llegué a la conclusión que existen 6 perfiles (que a su vez pueden ser híbridos y optar por la combinación de varios caminos): 1. El Retirado Es el caso de el que se cansó de trabajar, ...

A post today called Fuck the VCs caught my attention. I’ve been a full time entrepreneurs for over 10 years now and have tons of experience with VCs. Heck alot of my friends are VCs - “not that there is anything wrong wit that”. The fact is that VCs have lost their abiity to do early stage deals at scale. My good friend Scott Rafer makes a great point - their behavior is more around ...
